I am unable to do squats, never have been able to my whole life. Basically ive narrowed down the problem to  my shoulders, I am unable to get under the bar and pull my arms back far enuff to grab onto the bar comfortably, as in the bar cannot fit between the back of my traps and hands and it took a $330 personal trainer to tell me this (I was really embarassed to find out myself so please be easy on the new bashing). I was wondering if you guys can offer me any advice on the situation, I have just started doing shoulders stretches (yesterday) and i know its probably gunna take a while for me to get that elastic, but any advice helps...... and i have never started a stretch routine tilll now.

I am 5'11, 23yrs old, on the hefty side of 232lbs, 380lb bench. Never done squats. Tried deadlifts, but hurts my lower back (again i am a newb). So my leg workouts have been done primarily on the leg press machines, hamstrings, and leg curls. What inspired me to finally ask for help was when i read the post " showArrow("3/18/2007 11:42:22 PM",127347,71,false) Stop f**king around and lift like you mean it.  "

Since squats are so important and help the overal develpment with growth and strength you really need to do them.. Several options would be...

Front Squats
DB Squats
Sqatting bar attachment

All three of the above will easily solve your problem and you can squat until you are flexable enough to get your hands on the bar for a regular squat.  Just start with light weight.

i must not be doing the front squat right, durn thing hurts, did 3 sets of 6 with 10s on both sides. so basically i let the bar rest on my front shoulders and wrap my arms around the bar correct?

by the way i found out why my back was hurtin from doing deadlifts. it was my foot position. it was shoulder width, but i pointed my feet outwards instead of inwards. scooting my toes inwards 1 inch made a world of difference on my back!!
