need some help - Sunday, December 10, 2006 9:07 AM
I'm new here. Uhh all in all I'm a pretty athletic person. I run 1 1/2 to 2 miles a day. I've been trying to get into strength training for the last 2 years. And I really don't have a clue were to start still.
Usually my motivation starts to fizzle out after a couple of months from the lack of results. Not that a don't get any result they are just lacking. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to diet and routine and how many reps and sets and what not. I read all these websites and it seems like most are just trying to hawk their supplements and ebooks(not that supplements are bad). I guess I'm still a beginner at this stuff. Do any of you know of any good books I could pickup at a bookstore that could cover diet, routine, reps, set, and how much to start with. Just a good all around information and reference guide to the stuff I mentioned.
Help would be appreciated.

Well, what are your goals as far as lifting go? are you trying to put on muscle and get bigger? or are you just trying to tone?

and im sure your lack of results are probably due to the diet portion, although I have no idea what your workout plan was. Im not really into supplements myself so I cant help you there, all I take is whey protein, creatine, and a multi vitamin. Book wise there is so many, literally theres tons of diet books and tons of muscle building/exorcise books.

My advice to you, is to not listen to everyone out there...If you find a great plan that works for you, then stick with it. You'll get the jist of things eventually try searching this site, and other sites. Try asking people that have made great gains where you want to, and I dont mean those juicing guys...unless maybe thats what you wanna do.

Read this as a starting point, and follow the link at the end of the article to find out how many calories a day you really need to gain muscle. That's the best place to start- If you head to the bookstore, you'll find tons of books with differing opinions and statements in them, which can be frustrating-
The thing is, there are many ways to go about gaining mass once you get into detail. The three main rules, however, stay the same-
Eat, Train, and Rest.
Finding out how many calories you need is the first step towards eating for mass. Next step should be for you to head over to our nutrition forum and do some reading- The top posts there are full of tons of great info. With that, you should be able to build yourself a nice daily diet to make sure you reach your required number of calories per day.
Training comes next- There are tons of different routines out there, and finding one that will work for you can also be frustrating. However, if you ask around here, you'll get plenty of helpful advice on different sorts of routines. For the most part, you'll see people advising that you work each muscle group once or twice a week, three or four sets per exercise, three exercises or so per muscle group, etc- Just keep in mind there's no single perfect routine.
Lastly, rest- Muscle is grown when your body's resting, not while you're in the gym, so you have to make sure your body gets plenty of down time for that reason. Hitting the same muscle every day, or even every other day, won't leave that muscle with time to rebuild from the previous workout. It's also important to give your body a day or two a week with no workout to make sure you've fully recovered from the previous week.
Once you have those three areas more or less covered, you'll start to see nice results soon enough.
