need advice, just held bench on my side.. - Saturday, January 13, 2007 12:59 PM
I was working on bench and I had nobody to spot me, suddenly I cant lift up anymore, and I was stuck in that position, nobody was home so i was screwed. So I had to try to move the bench onto my side while I readjusted my hands, so I had to lay it down right above my hip bone and I finally managed to get it off. however a few hours later now, I'm starting to feel very sore in that area. does anyone think i could have damaged something?

I would ice it for a couple of days.  It is probably a bruise, perhaps a deep bruise.  If it gets worse, seek medical attention.  You may want to go to dumbbell presses.  They work the chest better anyways, and are easier on your shoulder joints.  If you want to do barbell presses, buy or build yourself a spotting rack.  If you don't know what that is, it is a steel tubing frame that goes around your bench.  You set the height to just above you chest so that when you fail, the rack hold the bar so you can get out from under it.  You could build one out of a few 2x4's if you don't want to spend the couple hundred bucks.  I would go to the dumbbells though.
