I got through 3 sets on the chest press machine doing 8 reps on increasing weights. Then did one set on the fly machine of 8 reps, and one set of dumbbell bench press. My problem is that aftr I completed all these exercises I was completely exhausted. I could barely do 1 pushup when I tried. It was only about 15 minutes after getting to the gym and I was leaving already. What am I doing wrong?

Don't get discouraged. You're doing fine. Your workout shouldn't last an hour no matter what kind of shape you are in. Being a beginner you need to ease into it. As long as you feel like you did what you could you are in the right.

You're shocking the hell out of your body right now, but you'd be surprised at how quickly it will adapt- Almost everyone feels the same way the first time they lift. Also, almost everyone makes some mistakes their first time, too- Although I don't think they have anything to do with the way you feel, here's a couple of pointers that might help. First of all, it doesn't sound like you warmed up- Based on your recount of the workout and the amount of time you spent in the gym, anyway. At the very least, when you start to work out a muscle group, you should pick the exercise you're going to start out with and do two sets at a very light weight, ten reps each. This helps get the blood flowing, prepares the muscles for work- And most importantly, helps prevent injury. Second, you probably shouldn't try to do pushups right after working your chest right now. Just get used to the bench press workout, add more sets to the dumbbell presses and flies when you feel up to it.

k thanks for the advice...also is using the chest press machine an OK substitute for the bench press? I feel like sucha goon struggling to lift such little amounts of weight on the bench and for now I'd rather just gradually build up to it.

I would actually suggest using dumbbells. It's harder and you can't use as much weight, but you recruit a lot more muscle in the stabilization. Don't worry about numbers. You only want to stress the muscle for now. The strength will come. You don't want to build up your strength only to wish later on that you had been building your stabilizers as well. Don't be afraid of an exercise because it's tough. Just make sure to be safe and have a spotter.
