cheaper supplements?
-
Thursday, October 27, 2005 10:43 AM
I have been searching around on the internet, and I have discovered that at times it is cheaper to buy supplements from various web sites, as opposed to the manufactures web site itself. Does anyone know why this is?

Cause they don't have to pay as many people to work in a wharehouse to pack and ship. There is less overhead.

So are the internet companies buying in bulk at a discount from the manufacture and then able to sell at a discount? And if so are the bulk sales making so much more than the amount of buisness they loose? Just curious.

A manufacturer can actually sell for waaaaaaaaaaaaay less then any website that sells it. They sell it to stores at a price more then it costs them to make and then the store has to mark it up even more. A product may cost the manufacturer $10 to make. They sell it in bulk to a company at $15 each. Then that store sells it at $20 online. Why does the manufacturer sell it at a higher price then online stores then (when they could be selling it for less then they sell it to stores)? That's easy! If a manufacturer sold it for less then online stores no online store would carry their line. Why carry someones line when they try to steal business from you buy whoring out their products at prices you can't match? The manufacturer would lose a lot of money if they did that... so they don't.

Kris is right on the money. If we (Avant Labs), for example, sold our products for a lower price than our retailers, we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot. Even though we have to greatly reduce our prices per unit to sell to retailers, we sell a LOT LOT more that way. In other words, the massive volume that we sell to retailers more than makes up for the fact that we're charging less per unit. Think of a demand curve. It slopes downward, reflecting the fact that in order to sell more, you have to reduce the price. But even though the price is reduced, you're still making money because you're selling a lot more units.

No offense, but by judging everyones ability to speak english coherently in this post, you're probably the most likely to not understand the economics of supplements.

Well I am not supporting or promoting any website, and that is why I did not even mention the one that caused me to ask. But, I saved over $60 from what I was about to pay from a manufactures website, and they had free shipping on top of that, and they shipped it the same day. I was just curious that was all, and thanks for all the responses guys.

Why? How about for supporting entrepreneurship and innovation? These guys provide a great store to buy products from, as well as a great message board to discuss them on, and you're asking why you should buy products from them? Well you be sure to at least thank them for letting you use this board freely to show your lack of support for them. "Hey guys, love using the board you provide for us, but um, I'm gonna' buy my products elsewhere." Nice.

I did buy from Supp 101, I have talked over the phone to Kris (1 and a half year ago)...super guy...I prefer giving Kris 5 more bucks for his knowledge and courtesy than than buying from a no name guy who only want to sell you crap. Plus you have a discount is you are a db premier member. Supplements101 is a well known comapny here, effective, good prices, good staff...give them business !
