I think a lot of people missed the point here. Of course you CAN speak whatever language you wish at home, in your car, outside on line at the bank, wherever. This is after all, a FREE country! However, I agree that of course ENGLISH SHOULD BE OUR OFFICIAL LANGUAGE. Nobody is saying that you have to stop speaking French, Russian, Japanese, or whatever your native language might be. What proponents of a law to make English our official language have a problem with is the over accomodation to non-English speakers. When you go to vote, the signs are in all different languages. This SHOULD NOT BE. When you come to America you will have to learn English and we the American people don't have to write our documents to cater to those who for whatever reason, don't bother to learn the language. When my grandparents came here from Russia, they either had to learn English (which 3 out of the 4 did) or they would lead very limited lives. There is no other country on the face of the planet which would bend over backwards for people who don't speak the language of the nation. Diversity is great. Celebrating your nationality is great. But when you live in the U.S. you will have to learn English.

Well I think that the Lewis Black thing is pretty funny where he tells how he got pulled over by a cop that didnt know much english when he was in florida. Then he goes on to say the guy should be able to speak english...why? because he is carrying a GUN! Anyways Dae_Light it annoys me that you say you speak american and that people in the USA call themselves americans because mexicans and Canadians are also Americans and you could also consider the people in south america americans too

YES!!! English should be the official language! Moreover, it was recently suggested that AMERICAN should be the official language, since our version of english is different than the English version of english. I agree. American should be the official language. We have so many words in our language that are derived from our languages that simply calling it english would be a misnomer. I also think in order to even be considered entry into the United States for anything other than tourism, you should be required to take a comprehensive english exam that tests on at least a 6th grade level. If you can't pass that, then obviously you don't have what it takes to effectively communicate in America.

Being from Cuba, English is not my first language, it is my third in fact. And I would not presume to live here did I not speak the language. That is a given. Were I to move to Russia I would certainly make sure I was able to speak Russian. So there that is only proper.

I def think it should be the official language, but that's cuz I don't wanna take the time to learn another, hahaha. Actually, I took three years of Spanish and I have a Chinese-speaking friend, and it seems to me like English has the least exceptions to rules, at least out of those two.

HELL YEAH, how would they respond if you went to Mexico and bitched that no one spoke english. I do believe that knowing more than one language is beneficial (my daughter is learning Spanish), but I also believe that things run smoother with the basic concept of understanding one another!

At the end of the day, people should have a common way of communication and i think it should be English. It's been in America since the colonies way back, so yes i think it should be the official language.
