I base it on what i have read and from doctors i have talked to, i believe the highest dose you want per day is 1000mg, not 3000. Too much of anything is bad.

I was actually looking for some type of source that was documented and supported by research. I believe everyone should hold hands and sing songs. That doesn't necessarily make it so. My experience with most most Dr.'s is that they don't have time to stay informed on everything. So far you have stated kidney stones etc and an opinion on what you believe the dosage should be. I am aware of the potential side effects none of which you have listed. Many people do not research the things that they are taking. For example, in some rare cases creatine has been known to cause kindney stones, bloating & gas and the long term effects of creatine on the heart muscle have never been studied. I digress. Not trying to be an @$$ but I really enjoy vitamin c talk. To lend credibility to your statements I will need to see your arguments supported by some documented research. Look up the old Glutamine debate, that was a great battle between Twin Peak and Kris I believe. It use to be a hot topic but couldn't find it.

It use to be a hot topic but couldn't find it. It is still there. It's just under the "The Best of Supplements" post at the top. Robboe suggested that idea. Cleans up the topics.

I think the biggest thing here is the fact that there is no way your body needs anywhere near that much vitamine c, it just works the kidneys and liver to death. Check out a minute maid or orange juice bottle one day, it will say it has like 110% of daily recommended intake of vitamine c, bet it is nowhere near 3000mg, bet it isn't even 1000.

http://www.vitamin-insight.com/basics/daily-intake-chart-table.aspx based on a 2000 calorie diet, 90mg for a male. say you eat 3000cals, nowhere near 1000mg.

Thanks MDA, that is a good idea. quote:

Check out a minute maid or orange juice bottle one day, it will say it has like 110% of daily recommended intake of vitamine c, bet it is nowhere near 3000mg, bet it isn't even 1000. Ok you have added another unsupported opinion on the kidneys and added the liver. You have made reference to ever theraputic reference source "minute maid" which I will help you with. "The U.S. RDA for vitamin C is the amount of the vitamin used as a standard in nutrition labeling of foods. This allowance is based on the 1968 RDA for 24 sex and age categories set by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences The 1989 RDA for vitamin C has been set at 60 mg per day for women and men 19 to 50 years of age." That's where minute maid is getting there direction from. Ohio State University On the Kidney Stones: "It would appear that the theory of increased risk of kidney stones from high-dose vitamin C is not substantiated in the real world. It seems from the studies done that high-dose Vitamin C may actually help prevent kidney stones! This subject of kidney stones and vitamin C is a little more complicated than a simple yes/no, even though the above evidence is pretty convincing. Pauling discusses this in his book How to Live Longer and Feel Better. I quote from that: "It is well known that there are two classes of kidney stones, and that a tendency to form them should be controlled in two quite different ways. The stones of one class, comprising nearly one half of all urinary calculi, are composed of calcium phosphate, magnesium ammonium phosphate, calcium carbonate, or mixtures of these substances. They tend to form in alkaline urine, and persons with a tendency to form them are advised to keep their urine acidic. A good way, probably the best way, to acidify the urine is to take 1 g or more of ascorbic acid each day. Ascorbic acid is used by many physicians for this purpose and for preventing infections of the urinary tract, especially infection by organisms that hydrolyze urea to form ammonia and in this way alkalize the urine and promote the formation of kidney stones of this class. The kidney stones of the other class, which tend to form in acidic urine, are composed of calcium oxalate, uric acid, or cystine. Persons with a tendency to form these stones are advised to keep their urine alkaline. This can be achieved by taking vitamin C as sodium ascorbate or by taking ascorbic acid with just enough sodium hydrogen carbonate (ordinary baking soda) or other alkalizer to neutralize it." Vitamin C Primer Linus Paulin is dead now, but he was smart enough to win 2 nobel prizes and there is a conspiracy theory about missing the third. I got more but I'm missing SNL.

Tasty It doesn't sound like you really need anyone elses opinnion. And it seems like anyone elses be it small or large post is worthy. So I will not post on this subject anymore seeing as I don't take in huge quantaties of vitamin C, and am very very healthy.

I'm not trying to be a big meany. I answered the topic of this post, and you commented on my answer. I am open to new ideas. I get concerned when blanket statements are made that implicate MY health. I am always happy to explain my views or opinion on anything. I agree that posting creates discussions which people learn from.

I've certainly heard of the vit C conflicting reports, but i honestly never put any weight into the vit C causes stones side.
