What do you lose by throwing out the egg yolk? - Sunday, July 13, 2008 8:55 PM

Have a look for yourself, courtesy of nutritiondata.com (a great site for tracking your food intake)

1 large egg            Prot        Carb        Fat           Sodium   Cholest   Cal.          Cal. Ratio(prot/carb/fat)

raw (50g) whole 6g            0              5g(2sat)  70mg       211mg     71                35/2/63

raw (33g) white 4g            0              0              55mg       0              16                91/6/3

You lose 1/3 of the protein if you throw out the yolk, but you also loose almost all the fat and cholesterol.

It doesn’t get more calories; it gets fewer (71 vs. 16).  I think you are looking at the caloric ratio.  With yolk, most calories are from fat (63%).  Without yolk, most calories are from protein (91%).

The B vitamins, all the nutrients.  While I don't agree with some of my other fitness gurus that keeping all the yolks is a good thing, I also don't agree with tossing them all.  I like to use a few egg yolks depending on how many eggs I'm cooking.  I don't toss them all out in favor of all egg whites.  There's some things besides protein and calories contained in them that are healthy.

Don't toss them all out.

You lose the cholestral intake is why most people do it. Because high amounts can lead to walls built up in your arteries then blood flow to your heart is slowed down leading to heart diseases and strokes. This is only nessary if you eat alot of eggs on a normal bases however

Ya well what I do is like I have about 2 whole eggs then like 2 more egg whites so I have 2 full eggs and then the extra protein and stuff from the 2 whites. This way you cut down on the cholestrol and fat while you still have everything else.

The yolk is by far the healthiest part of the egg, however, the egg should be eaten as a whole.  The VAST majority of nutrients are concentrated in the yolk.  What is your fear of eating the yolk?

WOW. What you eat doesn't affect how much acne you get.

I'm gonna side with marc's fitness gurus and say don't throw out a single yolk.  You are throwing all the nutrients straight to the garbage.  And there is NOTHING bad about eating a whole egg.  Dietary cholesterol has very little to do with your overall cholesterol levels.  And I would hope that no one wants to make the saturated fat argument.

EAT THE DAMN YOLKS

Nutrients?  Who eats eggs for nutrients?  Nutrients are the reason I take a multivitamin.
In the movie Rocky, when Rocky drank that big glass of raw eggs: Sure, he included the yolks—but he drank it for the protein.  THE PROTEIN DAMNIT!
