Deadlift battle scars - Sunday, June 22, 2008 4:49 PM
I just started doing deadlift about 2 months ago or so with light weight and I noticed that the bar was scraping against my shins on the way up.  Now, I am doing heavier weight and it actually breaks the skin on my shins.  By the end of my deadlift sets I have a stream of blood going down my leg.  I asked someone from the gym about it and he said no so I didn't worry about it, but it has been getting worse.  It doesn't hurt or anything, but is this a big problem?  I thought about dropping weight, but it isn't all that heavy yet and the rest of my form is good.

Don't scrape it so hard...ffs. When they say it should be in contact with your legs the entire way up, they don't mean in contact as hard as you can make it. I bruise my shins occasionally, but they have never bled. Also id lay off them for 2 weeks to let those cuts heal up properly.

Usually when I get to the top of my deadlift I'll do a reverse-grip curl.

I don't scrape on purpose, it just happens when I straighten my back.  It could be b/c I try to erect my back too soon, but I don't know.

Most people aren't up for this but if you want to; post a video of you deadlifting.

Yeah or maybe wear some really long socks. I've never heard of this happening before. Maybe if it isn't too hard for you position your legs on the bar so that your shins don't come into contact with the grip part of the bar. I guess it depends on the bar two, the one I use has a smooth part and my legs actually line up with it. I guess that's why I've never had a problem.

- Tracksuit pants ftw.
- Your back isn't straight during a Deadlift, like every other compound exercise you need that slight curve in your lumbar spine (lower). But I'm assuming that's what you meant by straight... lol
- Put yourself in such a stance that it barely touches your shins at all. Experiment with the bar until you get it right comfortably with as good form as possible. I used to make your mistake but now the bar never touches my shins.

It's in such a moment where at the bottom of the lift, my knees surpass the bar, but as I lift it up my knees get out of the way for the bar to pass. Like a machine, that's what you should be aiming for.

Stop and Stare.

go to your local sports equipment store and purchase some baseball catchers knee/shin pads.

i would LMAO if i saw a guy walk in with padding all the way up the front of his legs haha.

Pumping the iron, moving the lead.  I hope all the attention I get doesn't go to my head.

Yeah, some of my friends suggested shin guards, but I don't think I could do that.  I'm going to deadlift tomorrow and I'll try to adjust some things.

Yeah, I make sure to clean the bars before and after I deadlift to keep me from getting infected and to keep others from worrying.

I used to bleed but then I use leg drive to get it over my knees then pull back once it got over my knees.
Please check it out.

i started to scrape pretty good too so i started to wear pants while deadlifting.  I also started to try and keep the bar out a little bit.  pants are a good start.
