ORIGINAL: Stillseeingreen Btw the old hag part of it from what I understand is that some people to claim to feel a sense of terror and a great weight on their chest when this is happening. This led to people saying that an old hag (witch) was sitting on their chest, seems like a strange leap to me. Well, in addition to the sensation of pressure on the chest (or sometimes a floating sensation), there are visual and auditory hallucinations - you haven't completely stopped dreaming during the sleep paralysis state. In addition to the old hag, there are quite a few people who see a demon or succubus or similar thing sitting on their chest, or standing in the room, or interpret the experience as alien abduction (read any alien abduction story, and it'll match up perfectly with sleep paralysis.)

so that explains it! HAHA j/k But once i did fall to sleep with my eyes half open/closed (take your pic) and i wasnt really dreaming, but when my sister walked up the stairs i suddenly started dreaming a hunched over dude was crawling after me down a sewer. I guess its that word i cant remember where the brain sees an image and tries to make out what it is and then **** starts going down and you hallucinate/dream. Cool stuff...not nice though, scared the crap outta me LOL

I once was VERY hammered and took night time allergy medicine. Bad idea. I felt like I had sleep paralysis. I wanted to roll over and literally couldn't. I got a phone call and couldn't move to answer the phone. It was terrible. I probably could have died.

I also have had for the sensation of trying to yell or talk but wasn't able to and it usually happens after a really weird ass dream. Like one time when I watched the ring then that night I had a dream of the girl and I couldn't do anything, scared the hell outta me.

I think what they are talking about with the niquil and alcohol is more of a chemical interaction than REM atonia. You are right about alcohol suppressing REM sleep. In addition the next time you sleep after a night of poor sleep or no sleep you enter REM rebound, dreams can be more intense (nightmares). And supposedly poor sleep habits can encourage REM atonia so the alcohol use could actually cause it in the long run (speculating).

theres an herb that i tried a couple of times one summer called mugwort, and it is supposed to let you control your dreams and it was great in the beggining cuz i could do wutever i wanted in my dreams and then i started having extremely horrific nightmares and that took me off mugwort for life, but still cool.

I rember having one of those too, it wasn't exactly that scary I just couldn't move. I do remember one time when my parents were away and the house was completely empty I went to sleep in my room and woke up in my parents bed. Definitely a "wtf" moment there. quote:
ORIGINAL: SouLja I remember having that feeling as a kid. Did lots of research on it over the summer one year and looked into lucid dreams and out of body experiences. Spent the whole summer trying to achieve them and had one lucid dream and 3.5 out of body experiences. Pretty cool stuff Do tell. Or does it involve illegal substances?

Apparently experienced lucid dreamers can actually focus and learn while dreaming. Say you had an exam, you wanted loads of sleep, lucid dream test yourself. You get an extra 8-9 hours of revision done with sleep...Now all it takes is years of training and most likely drugs to achieve it HAHAHAHA....

It's a form of self hypnosis actually, and not sleeping really. You don't go into any stages of sleep, just a state of deep hypnosis, and you don't go into REM, the illusions you see are in your head.
