ORIGINAL: twistedlink I dont understand credit cards, really i dont, you put say $5000 on there, yay, i can buy $5000 worth of stuff, then once you have used it up or the year is up they charge you the 5000 plus interest for using the card. Why not just use your own bankcard direct debit? Its exactly the same as a credit card only without the interest, it comes out your bank account when used. Or dont americans have direct debit? Just seems silly to me to purchase a credit card if you can use the same money from your debit card, and not pay interest. And 99% of stores here take debit cards...so.... i used to think like this. now I charge mostly everything on my credit card. used to use my debit card... but i have the "rewards program" with the debit card, you have to spend 4 dollars to earn 1 point. with the credit card you get point for every dollar spent. once you earn 5000 points.. you get free stuff. (money, gift certificates.. etc.) I pay off my credit card month by month, and don't put money on it that I don't have. I think 10,000 points = 100$ free money. you'd be suprised how much money you spend month by month on just food, gas.. etc. so that's why I use my credit card instead of my debit card if i can. AND, it builds up my credit score too I suggest you whack your calculator out, because for a company to survive they need profits, so somewhere along the line theyre making money from the people using there product. I mean sure theres reward programs, but work out interest vs no interest rewards vs less rewards, you should find despite having more rewards, the interest still means you lose more money overall, afterall, the credit card company must make money somewhere??? quote:
Credit cards let you get stuff that you can't afford. They are awsome!!!! I can see you on the front cover of "debt weekly" correct. they make money from the people that make the "minimum payment". after 30 days, you get the bill for your credit card. you have the choice to either PAY ALL OF IT. or, make the minimum payment. if you don't pay all of it, the debt that you don't pay off starts to acrue interest after 20 or 30 days. i've been in debt before. i don't spend what i don't have. and they aren't getting any interest from me... i assure you. I pay it off instantly when the bill is issued, interest free. it's really a win/win situation

Unfortunately, too many Americans live on credit. Paying off month by month is important - but diffiicult when our society tells us to buy anything we want. Twisted - is the cost of living pretty high in the UK? For us, some parts of the country are expensive, but others are not.

ORIGINAL: twistedlink fair enough, i didnt know credit card companies did that, i thought they were interest grabbing demons! it's ok. credit card companies can be thought of as the devil, or they can be your best friend. it's all in how the person uses the card, and if they can back up what they purchase. i simply.. will NOT spend money i don't have. i use my credit card like i would use my debit card (like the money comes straight out, but it doesn't) c.c. companies pretty much RAPE you with interest after that first month of no interest during the billing period. If you don't pay off the full amount.. you're pretty much screwed. interest rates = anywhere from 20 to 40% of what's on the card. absolutely ridiculous. anyways.. nuff talk about credit cards i spose. we are way off topic now

Ehhh it depends... To be fair the UK is pretty much becoming communistic. House prices are falling, but interest rates are rising, as a result despite our houses being worth less, our mortgages are costing MORE (lol) Tax is just getting stupid, if you earn below 34...i think 34k a year, you get taxxed 25% If over 34k a year-50% If over 60k a year-90% A lot of people dont want promotions in big paying jobs because an extra 2-3k a year actually ends up meaning 20% more tax, so you actually lose 5-7k, not gain the 2-3. The richer you are the more tax you pay, which i agree with, but the labour government has had a bit of a "oops i pressed the wrong button" on the calculator moment, because rich people are being taxxed so much they end up getting as much money as a average wage person. which is why this place is becoming communistic, sure we get the chance to advance, we get paid more, but so much tax and small print prices are being thrust around when you deduct all rich peoples payments, theyre just as poor as the rest. Theres no middle ground in UK anymore, youre either poor or youre stupidly rich. Very few middle grounders. I did work out that so many hours at work (80 something i think) on minimum wage gets you the same money as going on benefits and not working A legal week is 53.5 hours i think, anything over is illegal, so in order to actually get the same money as someone on the doll, you need to work illegasl hours, or be paid above minimum wage, yet loads of jobs only pay minimum wage, not to mention that getting the same money from working as someone not working just isnt worth it. It only becomes worth it with at LEAST double the money, by which time the tax man has come along with the latex glove to give you some punishing. Which is why the UK now has multi millions unemployed, not to mention because the GBP is worth more than the euro were getting filled up with europeans working here, then exchanging the currency and sending it back. And thanks to us being in the "EU" they dont even need visas, they just walk in smile, go to the council and say "doll check please" and they get money ****ing retarded. Im moving away from UK once i have my degree and phD, im going to America or Australia, whicever one pays more and has better departments. I want to maybe go into marine biology so Australian coral reefs would be the best bet.

lol im not a UK patriot, id have thought thatd be quite clear the amount of times i bash its general public (chavs, retards, the usual mix) and the fact all our politicians are the same lol. seriously every speech they make is monotonous repitition of the same bollox, which is why every time a vote ever happens the newspapers keep printing "everyones really close!" because theyre all the same lol. Im not too bothered with UK's economy going to ****, in fact it is better, because now illegal immigrants are trying to sneak OUT of UK, hahaha, true irony that.

Twisted your numbers were a bit off it's 40% tax max which sucks if you're earning just over £36,001 because then you earn less than if you got paid £35,000 a year. Income Tax rates 2008-2009 by tax band and type of incomeIncome Tax band Income Tax rate on earned income (see note) Income Tax rate on savings Income Tax rate on dividends £1 to £2,320 Starting rate: Not available 10%* £1 to £36,000 Basic rate: 20% 20% 10% £36,001 and above Higher rate: 40% 40% 32.5% http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/BeginnersGuideToTax/DG_4015566 You should check everything out so you know what you should be getting, occasionally the government does something useful. I think you may get money off something or some benefits if you apply for the right stuff.

that is rediculous for gas, I guess everyones economy is in the dumps right now....Except for Saudi Arabia probably sicne they have all those Oil Lords there. The black market fuel idea is brilliant! hahaha, smuggle oil into the UK hahahaha. Someone put the high gas prices in perspective though. Something like.. a gallon of Nyquil would be $42.56 a gallon of something $$$$$ a gallon of something else $$$ I forget them all but htey were all higher then gasoline prices. 2 good things about high gas prices, the high prices are forcing people to think of an alternative, which is much needed. Also killing our economy is sending all the illegal immigrants back home and the American LEGAL Citizen is getting jobs the illegals once did because they got let go from their other job due to the failing economy. I know where I live the illegals are slowly filing out because everything is too expensive.

Take your case with £36,001, say you made 35,999 so were taxed at 35%. The raise to 36,001 would mean pay 35 % for the first 36,000 and 40% for the amount after. You still make more money, but it doesn't grow at the same rate.

It may work that way in England Sheep Man but no one I know wants to go into the £36k pay range unless it's much higher and they all said because of tax so I presumed it was 40% on everything if it isn't then the site isn't very clear. Point is still the same the tax is not as bad as Twisted put it although we do get taxed a lot.

You get taxed a lot because of your national healthcare.

Hmmm ive definitely got old figures then raiden, because i remember a 60% somewhere when i did business back in the day (over 6 years ago now lol) thats only one tax though, they tax you for inheritence, tax you for buying anything, tax you on any money you get. Soon theyre going to tax the ****ing lottery.
