Yeah, it wouldn't really be worth it to move unless you really wanted to be close to Yet.
Happiness basically works like this. First off, there's a base level of happiness in a town. This can be increased by certain research items. Also, your capital (your first town, though you can move it later when you have more towns) gets a bonus. You can increase it further by adding a tavern and by serving wine (and serving more wine increases happiness further). You can also increase it with museums (which you get later) and by displaying cultural treasures in the museums (which you get with cultural treaties with other players). From that total, you subtract the total population of the town. There are also a couple other things that can subtract from the score, like getting attacked or having corruption in a colony (which is something that doesn't happen until after you start planting colonies). Add it all together to get the happiness score. Divide that by 50, and that will be your hourly population growth. So if your happiness is 175, your population would grow at 3.5 people per hour.
Of course, as the population grows, the happiness will gradually decrease, in turn decreasing the population growth rate. Your population will also stop growing if the town is full - your population is limited by the size of your town hall. There are certain research items, like well digging that also bump up the maximum population size.

Ya gotta put more people on log detail, even if it runs a deficit for a while. You don't want to run down to zero gold, but it's OK to lose a little gold for a while, because as your population grows, you'll get back into the positive. You don't really need gold as much as you need resources.
What I like to do is set it up so that when I'm gonna be away from the game for a while, it will work in a deficit for half that time, then be back in the black for the other half so in the end my total gold doesn't change much. Like before bed, I know I'll be away for 8 hours. If my population is growing at 2.5 per hour, then I know it'll grow by 10 in 4 hours. Each of those people earns 4 gold if they're not working at the academy, gathering resources or working as part of the military. If I set the sliders at the mill or whatever to show a town income of -40 gold, then about halfway through the night it'll be back to zero, then by morning it'll be about +40. So over the course of the night my total gold will be about the same.

Speaking of logs, I gotta start saving up so I can make another colony. I have to upgrade my palace and both of my governor's mansions, and that requires 19,627 wood, 6,877 marble and 4,585 glass for each one. It's gonna take me a couple weeks.

You get a small allotment of them when you research something (I think it's wealth), and you can trade resources with other players with the trading post.

Okay guys heres the plan
Were going to do a DBB.com takeover of this place, all give your co-ordinates and give each other your luxury items.
for example im on an island with a vineyard, so i supply all members with wine, another has marble, they supply marble, this way none of us have to purchase luxury goods and theyre all shared out equally, then we pwn the server and bring everybody down...
...Or we could just workout like we used to before we started playing this game LOL.

To be fair though jheft, that is true, however, you said resources are invaluable, so if we spread all ours out evenly, make an alliance together (as in everyone) and STILL purchase resources, then it will be effective right?
I mean sure, you could buy 50,000 wine, but i doubt youd pass up a nice boatload full if it means your populations can get pissed and populations can gro like wildfire?
wine isnt a good example, marble, even if you can buy loads, getting an extra boatful would still be nice lol
right now ive got 15k gold, level 5 academy, level 5 townhall and have done either stage 3 or 4 of research in all 4 areas.
I reckon il be building military by wednesday hopefully and go kick the ass of some little lvl 1 polis place lol

Blessings are expensive, and they're not 100% implemented in the current beta. Even if that weren't the case, it's too costly to have ships and action points tied up for days at a time distributing materials.

I was about 188 at the end of the contest. My body fat right now is probably 13% or so, maybe higher.

My islands suck. I can't buy anything from anyone, and nobody wants to buy sulfur. So now I'm at a lame duck stance waiting to get 12,000 gold to start a colony on a marble island.
