If you have space for it it's worth getting the power rack because it can be your spotter. You can also do things like rack pulls, partial ROM bench presses, etc. Most come with a pull-up bar, and some have attachments available for doing various cable exercises; they're a system you can upgrade as you go along. For example, if you want a nicer bench later on, you can just get it. Also, a bench that can incline/decline is worth it IMO. And if you do get a power rack, you want a bench that can roll in and out (generally the rack does not come with an attached bench - you buy the bench you want separately.) The one complaint I have about my rack is that it's not tall enough to do things overhead presses, push-presses, etc. inside the rack, so I either have to move the bar out of the rack to do them (which requires me to do calculus in the tiny space I have) or have a second bar outside the rack.

I don't know about that hardway... that looks scarry.. Like a bad accident waiting to to happen.. You can get a decent power rack anywhere form $250-$300... and if you're luck and shop wisely.. you might even find fee shipping.. well worth the money if you're going to invest in your lifting..

I agree they looks scary... With a power rack, if you're totally blown at the end of a set of squats, you can just step forward 'till you hit the uprights and set the weight down safely. With these you're going to have to focus on lining up both sides at once and setting it down without tipping them over and being killed. *phear* Now, I know you've been squatting by cleaning dumbbells to your shoulders, and one time you managed to just about kill yourself doing that... So maybe this is an improvement. But I cannot overstate the value of a power rack. I mean, maybe you can get rid of your bed or a table or boyfriend or something to make space?
