Whey and Creatine

OK I've been taking protein shakes for over a year now but I was always told that b/c I'm a girl I shouldn't take whey or creatine. No one ever told me why. I'm really thin and can stand to gain 10-15 pounds of mass and still be far from bulky. Can someone please explain to me what these are and what they do to you, and if they're safe for me. Thanks

I was always told that b/c I'm a girl I shouldn't take whey or creatine Nonsense....Anyone looking to improve there body in anyway will benefit from high protein. Protein is the building block for muscle. More muscle, higher metabolism, easier to burn fat. And I'm pretty sure creatine won't hurt you either. For me, all it does it give me more energy in the gym. Some people say you gain weight from it, but it depends on what your goals are. I personally wouldn't take creatine during a cutting phase.....but if your looking to add muscle, creatine can help. That's my two cents...

I wouldn't worry about Creatine and whoever said you shouldn't take whey is a fool. That's like saying you shouldn't eat cottage cheese. Are you eating enough in your regular diet? I don't do protein shakes because I eat enough. If I ever got onto a schedule that didn't facilitate a proper diet I would supplement. You're kind of young for creatine to do you any good, aren't you? That stuff is for old guys like me that have a slow ADP-ATP conversion rate.

Whomever told you that probably believes whey and creatine will instantly turn you into a 300lb bodybuilding champion. Creatine is good however I didn't like the headaches I got from it. Your fine to use either product.

so is creatine like speed or something? does it have caffine in it? is that the point of taking it before a workout? ok, does anybody know what this stuff is made out of? Thanks guys

and to naviator...I take protein now but its not whey, and that's b/c I have a rediculously high metabolism. It's super hard for me to gain weight for long periods of time.

So are you telling me that if you ate 3000 calories per day of a good balanced diet you would not gain weight? What kind of stuff are you eating? I'll let someone else explain the ins and outs of creatine, but essentially it increases the rate at which ADP is converted back to ATP. Young folks already have no problem with this. That's why they get their breath back so quickly.

Creatine more less helps you recover after a workout. Young people like myself  don't need this. As you age your body seems to slow down. Creatine give's it a boost, also if you take creatine make sure you drink lots of water.

to naviator, in a word, yes. in more words, according to all the calculators and everything i've read on here, i should be eating about 1500 calories to maintain my weight. I've been put on 2500 calorie diets and it didn't change a damn thing. I am a very busy person. As far as I can see, my body will make me burn whatever I put in it. I need to trick it into absorbing some calories or something, because not only am I playing football next year, but i'm applying for an ROTC air force scholarship and the minimum weight is 118. I float between 117 and 124 all the time. I'd love to be at 133-137. AHHHH!!!

The best answer is to eat more. Whey protein is not magic as it will not put pounds on when food has failed. It may help because the whey is more absorbable than any other protein. However, I would still recommend getting your nutrients from regular food. In two years I'm willing to wager that you won't have the skinny problem anymore. Ever hear of the Freshman forty? If you stay active you won't have a problem. ROTC should allow you the time. If you were going to the Academy I would say different. Everyone is different. You may be a 3000 calorie/day girl. There are guys your age on this site with the same problem, but they have to stuff 4-5000 calories down their gullets each day to gain. Just remember that your metabolism will change, so you can't eat like that forever and maintain that low BF%.

i've heard of the freshman FIFTEEN. but that's alright I'd love to put on 10-15 lbs so right now I'm trying to down about 20g of protein every 2 waking hours. I'm 120, and it turns out to be about 140-160g because I never can actually do that, or eat that much. But we'll see if it works out!

And so now I guess I should ask, what's a good type to get, I don't want to go blowing my hard-earned cash on nasty protein. So what do you guys suggest, I basically only have access to a GMC. And, what about vitamins and anything else I should be taking or look into? Thanks for any help!

HOW CREATINE WORKS The main energy source in your body is ATP. This is an abbreviation for Adenine Triphosphate. Each molecule of ATP contains 3 phosphates. When your body uses energy the bond holding the one of the phosphates together is broken releasing energy. When your body runs short on ATP, it begins to produce lactic acid, which is what makes your muscles sore after a workout. Creatine works by providing another phosphate to remake the ATP molecule. It also causes the muscles to take on water, which leads to a gain in size (mass). Creatine is found in meat and fish especially beef, and is made in your liver. For this reason, vegetarians usually have a lower amount of creatine in their bodies than everyone else.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
