ORIGINAL: brihead301 Strength is not just a powerlifting thing. There's a lot more to being strong then just being able to put up big numbers in the big 3. Strength = healthy body. Your joints, bones, tendons, and ligaments are better protected by the surrounding muscle. You become faster and more athletic all around. You don't "age" as quickly (as far as natural muscle degeneration goes - the old "use it or lose it" principle). You look better. The list goes on.... It makes no sense to me why someone wouldn't want to be strong. Why wouldn't everyone want to have the ablity to use all the muscles in their body to perform lifes' daily activities more easily? Basically a stronger body should be everyone's goal on here, even if your only goal is to look better. Train for strength, and I guarantee you that your physique will improve on a daily basis. I really really REALLY love this post.

On the other hand, if I can disagree with myself for a little bit... A lot of neophytes can use my argument as an excuse to skip squats and deadlifts and curl their little brains out. And everyone knows that big, heavy, compound movements are the best thing for building mass.

You will look awesome.

as a fighter i would be more inclined to choose strength over size. which i do. but i think i person can be big and strong simultaniously.

i dont think most girls would care, or even know how strong the guy is. i helped my friend (girl) move a piano out of her house and she was like "damn david ur stronger than u look" (i think i mentioned this in the past). but its not like that mattered much, i mean i wish i looked stronger instead.

For me, I'm going to go in a slightly different direction. I really dont have anymore inclination to get any bigger essentially, even thought I understand that through lifting it will happen and it's outta my control. For the strength, it's only for the ego really, which I stand for the "it's not what you lift, it's how you lift it." So I'd rather being doing 10 clean slow reps of 180 on the bench, then dying on 4 dirty reps of 225 on the bench. What I train for, I guess you call it definition. If I remained the size I am now, and was shredded to the core, I would be satisfied. However, I will get bigger because it comes with the territory, so this paradoxical post is essentially saying that I train for neither. I care most about what the mirror reflects, and the perception of others towards me.

You're not going to be able to bench 400 pounds and still look really weak. You will still look big or at least strong. Basically with strength comes at least some size.
