There's more to strength then just a 1RM or 3RM. If you get your 10 RM stronger everytime you workout, chances are that it will have an effect on your 1RM. Maybe not at an advanced level of training, but at a novice or intermediate level (which most of us on here are), then it will. I like to train in the higher rep ranges too, but I also try to add weight every workout - that's how you build the muscle. You can't keep using the same weight every workout, because your body will quickly adapt to that weight, and therefore it will have no need to get bigger unless it is subjected to a heavier load. I'd bet Scubasteve is pretty strong too. Unless you're genetically gifted, you're not going to look like that unless you progressively increase your lifts every workout no matter what rep range you work in.

ORIGINAL: brihead301 Strength is not just a powerlifting thing. There's a lot more to being strong then just being able to put up big numbers in the big 3. Strength = healthy body. Your joints, bones, tendons, and ligaments are better protected by the surrounding muscle. You become faster and more athletic all around. You don't "age" as quickly (as far as natural muscle degeneration goes - the old "use it or lose it" principle). You look better. The list goes on.... It makes no sense to me why someone wouldn't want to be strong. Why wouldn't everyone want to have the ablity to use all the muscles in their body to perform lifes' daily activities more easily? Basically a stronger body should be everyone's goal on here, even if your only goal is to look better. Train for strength, and I guarantee you that your physique will improve on a daily basis. Nobody said they didnt want to be strong. If the question was "would you rather be big, strong or big and strong" I think every single person would say big and strong. The question was either big or strong....thats what makes it interesting. Obviously being big and strong is the ultimate. Maybe I should ask "would you rather have all the money in the world or world peace" and you'd answer "i want all the money and world peace". Well no S**T.

actually I thought you would be stronger. But you cut alot of weight for that comp! Some muscle went with it, but thats always going to happen you can't totally cut down without losing muscle. Aye your old numbers are similar to my numbers. What's your plans now anyways ? Bulk to 220?

I think you both mean "content". "Contempt" has roughly the opposite meaning of what you're trying to express, and is the wrong part of speech to boot. Usage examples: "I would be content with 190 pounds at 8% body fat." "I have nothing but contempt for lazy slobs who can't find the time to achieve their goals."

If I had to choose between the 2, I would go for strength. Assuming I could stay a reasonable size. There are too many things I do that having the strength would benefit.

It's pobably the girl thing, but definately strength. I like being meaty, but my meatyness needs to have the goods to back it up. I don't like facades either 9someone else mentioned that I think). Yes the main concern is health and generaly being above avegare in fitness, strength and appearance. But to have one over the other as a ideal or goal, strength takes it for me. I often times am put in dangerous postions, where if I can not perform what I need to do, someone, maybe me maybe another person could be seriously hurt. I would hate to have someone say, you looked like you should have been able to handle that, what happened?? Right now while I do think I look stronger than I am, the revese is always uttered, damn, I didn't know you could do that (by strangers anyway, my friends and coworkers know better). I have great concerns because I am considered to be one of the "heaveys", if somthing is of insurmountable weight and fragility, I am first string to help move it. I am usually the charge as well, meaning I decide how to move it. But then I again, I have the oppurtunity/misfortune to use my strength on a regular basis.
