I was biking in the "medium" heart rate range (70-80% of max), but with my new bike that feels agonizingly slow. It's a fast bike and I want to go fast!

So I was just peeking at how IBB's program was treating you and I saw that^. So the you and the new bike are getting along well? Smile

Yep! Something you don't fully appreciate until you felt the difference for a while is the weight of a bike. My old bike was heavy. Even though it was an aluminum frame, the shocks, chunky frame and fat wheels really add up. So my advice to anyone shopping for a bike is to get the lightest bike they can get within their budget, then consider whether they should get something even lighter. Trips that took 20 or 22 minutes with my old bike take me 14 or 15 minutes now.

You really notice it when you have to come to a stop (or slow way down), then get back up to speed again. At maximum effort a person on a bike is outputting maybe half a horsepower, so every pound counts. I've held off on getting more accessories like a rack or fender because I don't want to add another ounce of weight!

The only problem I've had is that I've already had 3 flats in a just month and a half. I had the same problem with my old bike, but they reduced to like 1 flat a year after I got these tire liner things. The guy at the shop didn't have a high opinion of them, but they worked great. That was with the fat tire though, apparently with the skinny high-pressure tires they chafe on the tube and cause more flats than they prevent (or at least, that's what a couple bike shop guys have said.) Next time I take it in for a tune-up I'm gonna see about getting a set of armadillo tires, cause I ****ing hate flats.

I use the liner system on my beater bike. I agree with you, it does work great.

They do make thicker rubber tubes for road tires, I have use them with great sucess.

The first one at the top of the list is what I am talking about, many manufacturers make them,
http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsearch?query=BUTYL+RUBBER+THORN+RESISTANT+BICYCLE+TUBES+road&vwcatalog=phattire1&.autodone=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.phattire.com%2Firctorthorre.html

I'm glad you like your new ride.

Next time I get spare tubes (probably tomorrow at this rate), I'll check those out. I've also heard good things (and bad things) about the slime stuff. I'll probably hold off on the armored tires until I need new tires rather than going for that right away.

Thanks again for all your help with the bike shopping.

Aha, but that would be skipping ahead! This week is 95x15. I'm cutting now, so I don't quite have the energy I did last week and I don't have so many carbs pre-workout. All that would be doing is cutting a week out of the middle of the program. I want to sustain the chain of small, incremental increases for as long as possible.

Results on Bench for 2007-11-15:

Flat: 55x15 (warm-up), 100x15, 120x6, 120x6
Incline: 45x15 (warm-up), 85x11, 100x5, 100x4

The last rep at 120 was pretty damn wobbly, but it was all the way down and back up. Incline seems to be falling further behind. My triceps got more of a pump than usual, even the right one (which is larger and much stronger than the left, but never gets near as much of a pump).

You can up the strength in incline down the road.. Thats actually what I am doing now.. I got my flat where I wanted it so now I am upping the incline next.   "Atleast this is my plan when I am healed",  I came up with it after looking at some of your journals.  My incline is very low I can only max out on 215lbs.

Are you working out vicariously through me because you're injured? Smile

I'll worry about what I need to do with incline once it drops below 8 reps. Until then, I'll keep following the plan. I misjudged the strength difference between flat and incline to begin with.

Between yesterday and a good lats/biceps workout on Wednesday, this morning I feel like I got beat on by 3 guys with Mag-lites. I don't know if I've been this sore before from upper-body work. I'm main-lining my coffee because I'm too sore to lift the mug to my mouth.

Legs today... Squats are still frustrating me. The good news is that the issue with my left hip isn't getting worse, and it isn't usually noticeable except when I'm doing squats. The bad news is that it doesn't seem to be getting better. Also, I've got all kinds of form issues. I took some videos at light weight to see what it looked like. The good news is that I'm going plenty deep enough. The bad news is that there's nothing else right about it. I find I have to lean forward really far to keep myself from not tipping over backwards, but then I'm lifting too much with my back. It's practically a good morning instead of a squat. I'm concerned my knees are going too far forward too. But I did feel stronger than usual, and was able to complete more deep reps comfortably at every weight.

I'm also worried my glutes are overdeveloped, cause my butt sticks out pretty far. I used to think it was just fat, but it's actually pretty hard now...

God I can't wait for tomorrow man! 105 x 15!

Your really getting me excited because your core is so strong compared to your bench, I think it's actually helping you progress even faster with my routine.

if you can do 105 x 15 I want you to attempt 115 x 15 next chest session. If you do 115 x 15 you have blown your last max out of the water!

3 weeks in and already 35lbs onto your max bench. I think you will hit 205 - 225 in not time at all.

I have to admit to cheating...

Previously, between chest workouts (usually on the weekend and again on Tuesday which is an off day) I'd try for a new 1 rep max so that I could update my sig. But I would just do that one rep (maybe sometimes it would take a couple attempts), and not have an actual workout. This weekend I did 155, but it was pretty squirrelly (I took a video, which I'll post eventually). Last night was an off day, but I wasn't hanging out with my buds as usual cause they had relatives in town for Thanksgiving, and I got bored. I tried and failed twice to do 160, so instead I cranked out a set of 105x15 and one set of 125x6. I felt like doing a complete routine, but I'm trying to stick to your program, so I just kept it to that.

So I think I should do 110x15 tomorrow, since I've already done 105x15. Smile

I can't wait to get to the second part of your program, but I want to play out the first part as far as I can take it first. I just feel like I need to hit most of my upper body lifts more than once a week. I think after I'm done with this part, I'm going to do some sort of quasi-HST type routine. I'll do your routine for chest, and HST for the rest of my upper body stuff. I'll probably keep doing squats and deadlifts just once a week, because leg day leaves me sore for much longer than anything else, and my legs still badly outsize my upper body anyway.

LoL, Bad Jheft Bad! Don't rush it Smile

Oh good then! 110 x 15 it is! I can't wait for you to get it Smile

how about if you manage to do 110 x 15 this week, next week you do 120 x 15 Smile Your no where near the stopping point of this routine so you might as well add 10lbs per week now until your rep range drops to 14 reps. Then you can start adding 5lbs per week again.
