Keep in mind...

The Progressive Phase means bringing each set to MUSCULAR failure.  Which means, you can go a lot heavier than you think and either fail right at your 12/10/8 scheme or be within 1-2 reps of hitting it.

When I first start, I always hit my target reps and I'm not always at failure.  Which means during this phase, you can and should go heavier.  It's what makes the O.A. program so damn hard!

Can you imagine muscular failure with 30 seconds rest between exercises?!

Anyway, I'm proud of you Greg.  Not only did you pass the bar exam but not many lawyers have the nuts to train like this and really give it a go.

I think you'll notice some serious changes in your body after 7 days and towards the 3rd week, your journal entries are going to rock!  Smile

I haven't gone to failure yet (although in arm day, I came damn close on the chin-ups and dips); I always feel like I'm feeling my way around on the max weights.

During my week off, I did go to the gym a few times, mostly to stretch and to do some experiments.  I did some self-diagnostics to figure out some max's (those that I could do safely without a spotter--that's my one detriment), and to see if I was mostly white meat, dark meat, or a combination (fast twitch, slow twitch, respectively).  I'm mostly about 1/2 and 1/2, although my back interestingly, is more fast than slow.  I was shocked at my max on the leg extension--I wasn't anywhere close to it during my last routine.  Other max's were pretty close to what I thought they would be.

Today is leg day, and I'm going to put the max information to work for my advantage.  Still no spotter, so I'll be more guarded on the squats, and my back is still getting stronger, but still feel that I have some weak spots, so I won't max out on the deads yet, but I will increase weight on both since my last routine to encourage progress.  I'm actually just about ok with my legs anyway (I'm not aiming for monster), but I don't want to lose out on the testosterone!!!

One thing about arm day.  Damn, was I pumped.  I came home and measured the ol' biceps for grins to see if it was my imagination--but nope, 1/2" more on flex, and almost that much more relaxed.  Damn.  Even my partner noticed--he was suitably impressed.Smile  Too bad it goes away!

My work asked for pictures of when we were young for a retreat, and I found some.  I guess I have come along some since I was a teen!

I'm joining the 40 and over club in a few weeks.Smile  Age does have its advantages, thoughSmile.

I know what you mean.  My parents are relatively young--my mom had just turned 20 the week before I was born (they had been married over a year already!!!), and my Dad was 23.  Today, my mom has late onset diabetes, and my dad is overweight and suffers from gout.  I keep praying that they will do something about that--although my mom did change her diet some when she was diagnosed with diabetes, and lost a ton of weight.  My dad did start walking some, but I don't know if he's kept it up.  I keep hoping that between me and my sister (closest to me in age), we're setting a good exampleSmile.  Even my younger brother, who is also overweight (and married to the skinniest (stunning) woman ever), has started to exercise more.  My little sister is a gymnastics fiend and wants to make fitness part of her career (she's 18, and looking to own a gym some day).  Both of my parents are extraordinarily socially and culturally active, so it would be really hard on both to not be able to do all that stuff.  Plus, I want them around for a lot longer. . . .

yeah you were blessed with young parents though...as i am but 17 and my father is 58 and my mother 51 (dont tell her i told you, lol). my dad used to lift all the time and was a pretty big guy, 48 inch chest, 17.5 inch arms, around 6'2" before he got old...then we moved to texas to get away from the stress of his job, and he was supposed to start lifting with me...but he didnt, and its too bad because apparently it would have really delayed the onset of parkinson's, as he was diagnosed but a few months after i started lifting...

its ok, my family has learned to deal with it by now...we accept and my dad has come to terms with it as well...just took some time...i've learned that things can always be worse...at least its not fatal...while no one wants to watch as any family member suffers...he's in therapy twice a week, and receives glutathione IVs every week...so we're doing anything we can to make sure he stays comfortable...apparently one of the reasons he got it was from exposure to pesticides...he used to use that RAID ant spray to kill the ant problem we had in california, most of the time wearing shorts...i guess the toxins seeped through his skin over time and caused his nervous system to die, much like the poison's effect on insects...crazy stuff.

3-1 workout

No nutrition log today.  I was very good until dinnertime, so my last two meals blew.  See this posting for my stupidity of why:  http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/m_188488/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#188488

Of course you're not out!  You have lots of other body parts to work on!!!!!

160 lbs on a leg curl?  Jeez, my bones crack at the thought...

I think the real problem was the machine wasn't adjusted correctly.  I like a good stretch but the Cybex lying leg curl was probably positioned down too far.

While the stretch was nice, it took all the tension off the hamstring and put it on a small muscle.  My guess thinking back was the ROM was too much.  More than necessary.  And with heavy weight, you don't want to go beyond a normal ROM.

Next time, don't have such a hyper-extened setup!  Smile  (note to self)

I've actually been under the weather, which has been frustrating.  I did some cardio yesterday (bike commuting) that was much more intense than usual (strong wind in my face, both to and from work), but I was scared to work out lest I get full-blown sick.  I really wanted to do that back workout, too.  Maybe Sunday . . . . . . .

My partner today was like, "damn, you're muscles are getting hard"!  He has nice rose-colored glasses, but I'll keep him anyway.

Isnt it interesting how the machines generally help you not hurt yourself... but one setting off, and pad positioning is too high or low you can really jack yourself up....

Sorry to hear you hurt yourself, and of all things the ham's... follow some of the best advise you have given the rest of us and dont go hurting yourself more... Good luck Marc!

I'm feeling ya man, over the past few weeks I started to make sure big differences in myself.. my legs are cutting up and the muscles in my legs are getting alot of seperation... I was laying in bed and flexed the leg for the wife and she got discusted... I was so proud... but now I gotta take some time off from the gym... and its taking every bit of restraint on my part to not go... I am debating waking the wifes butt up right now and go mutilate some back.. but I dunno.. lol

HELP!

I'm sick.  A cold.  Nothing serious to keep me from work, but I'm afraid to workout.Smile

Any hints?  When should I go back to the gym?  I'm hoping tomorrow or Wednesday?

What should I do with the program?  Start over?  I only did 3 days of the first week.  Or pick up where I left off and complete the first week's workouts on Thursday and Friday, and start the 2nd week next week?

ARGH!  Stupid immune system.  It should KNOW better not to go to sleep on the job right now!!!

Start over...

OA is pretty intense.  You move quickly.  You lift heavy.  While the common cold doesn't have to stop you from hitting the gym or being active, it will put a damper on OA.  It requires too much recovery time and being able to lift your best.

What you can do if you refuse to stop working out when sick (as some do) is do Jeff's 2 week program at the beginning of the workout log book.

Nothing but 4 sets of 12 reps with some light supersetting of easy stuff.

It will keep you ready to hit it hard but not enough to seriously put more of a damper on the immune system.

While some guys/gals will say screw it, go for it!

I think you could end up prolonging your cold or making it worse.

Personally, I'd just do the 2 week thing or get over the cold and then HIT it hard when you get well.  Or just workout light to stay primed and then go for it.

When can you go back to the gym?

Depends on how quickly you can shake the cold.  Usually Days 1-3 are the worst.  After that, it's recovery which can take 1 to 7 days.  Depends on you man.  If you feel up to lifting heavy, go for it.  If you aren't quite there and feel like crap, then back off.

Personally I've had a cold and just busted thru it.  And then got the flu and had to take more time off.  At this point if I'm sick or I feel the slighted twing in my hammie, I just end the workout and come back later.

My experience has been that pushing it ultimately makes recovery take longer.

I know I sound like a sales rep for these guys but seriously take a look at airborn.... I have no spleen and basically a crappy immune system and lately I started getting sick, pounded that stuff for a few days and I fought it off... in the past it could have taken me weeks, plus ended up with a sinus infection.... Z trust me man, this stuff works, but 1 tube of it and give it a day or two.... but one thing is its a giant does of Vit C... and other herbs....

Like Marc said take your time off, just try really hard to keep your diet straight, think of it as a small "rebuilding" period.
