09-20-2006 workout

I did not feel as energetic or psyched today.  Those pull-ups are a bear.  Note that in the first serious set (the one after the warm up), I was able to do 2 (w/ 30 lbs assist, which feels like nothing), the next set 1.5, and each set after that, just 1.  All the others are just negatives.  But I've improved a wee bit.  I can't wait until I'm one of those show-offs who jump on the bar and pump out at least 10 of them, no sweat!!Smile

Heh heh heh *blush* dinner at friends is never good on the ol' eating plan.  At least I kept the wine to one glass.  Not so strong in the dessert section. . . heh heh heh

Also had serious cravings in the middle of the night for cereal.  So I had some at about 3 a.m.  Raisin Bran w/ milk.  It's not on the log, but I admit it.  I'm not sure where those cravings are coming from, or if it's just part of a habit?  Did I truly "listen" to my body, or did I succumb to something bad?!?

HUFF PUFF hggg hggg HUFF PUFF hggg hggg - intervals, with longer (cough cough) sprints.  Unlike Tuesday, which I did the sprints at a 7.5% incline, today I did them at a 2% incline.  Still . . .

09-23-2006 - WRAP UP!

Ok, even though there's one week left in the program, I am stopping now, for two reasons:

(1) I'm feeling very run down.
(2) I want a week's rest, as Jeff Anderson suggests, before doing his Optimum Anabolics Challenge, which is calculated to last until December 1, but starts basically the beginning of October.

Summary of progress, goal achievement, and program:

Stats  indicate

Start
End
22.5" thighs
22.75
40" chest
40.5
39.8" abdomen
38
11.8" biceps
12.125
14.5" calves
14.5
6.5" wrists
6.625
11.5" forearms
10.75
22.5" thighs
22.75
40" chest
40.5
16-18% BF
14-15%
weight 193-195
182-183

Thoughts on stats:

I almost achieved my goal of 1"/month off the abdomen area, so YAY! for that.  As the pictures will show, I'm no greek god yet (dammit!).  I lost, according to the scale, 10-13 lbs; the body fat readings say that the amount of fat lost is (in the best scenario) 10 lbs; the worst scenario is 3.45 lbs (calculated by figuring out the extremes in the ranges of bodyfat calculations from 1-pinch with Accumeasure calipers and bodyweight).  So let's call it 6.5 lbs or so by the math.

Moving on, what amount of muscle was gained?  Looking at the extremes to get the range, that would be -3 lbs to + 4 lbs.  Looking at these numbers and those for the fat loss, it looks like in the worst-case scenario, my weight loss was evenly divided between fat and muscle; in the rosiest scenario, to get to my current weight, I would have had to lose an additional 4 lbs of fat (for a total of 14-17 lbs of fat), and no muscle.

This shows to me the folly of relying on one or even two variables.  These results are inconclusive.

For fat loss, let's look at the abdominal measurement.  I lost two inches there.  Overall, my less-fatted body part measurements stayed the same, or went slightly up (except forearms, which went down, and chest, which went up a nice half inch).  My strength also went up (yes, it's not the best index of mass).  So, I would have to conclude that a majority of the weight-loss was fat, but muscle gain was modest.

That would defeat the program's (unrealistic) claim that you can build muscle while losing fat.  Technically, from my results, that's not incorrect, per se.  It's misleading--lose lots of fat, and gain only modest amounts of muscle.

Please please please please please weigh in if you see mistakes in my math or reasoning!!!

Ok, on to the pictures.  My son took them for me, he's such a good little guy.  Here's the first, which is most comparable to the one posted on August 20 in this thread (hopefully you'll see that I've tanned a little to help preserve Nav's eyes; can you see a difference or not?):

The back, kind of pathetically posed.  When I'm relaxed, I feel like I have an old, out-of-shape, man's back!

Conclusions:

Program pros:  gets you on the track of eating 6X/day.  It has flexibility, it has everything planned out for you.  I love that part!  The progression of exercises is excellent, and seem well-geared to avoiding injury.

Program cons:  the web interface sucks for entering in foods other than those planned--very laborious (just like about every other web-interface software is).  The results as promised aren't quite as spectacular as the ad pages on the web would suggest; however, in the book, my results (when spun with the rosiest scenario) are comparable to their case studies (except on the pull up parts :) ).

Would I do it again?  I don't know.  Maybe, but I feel that the calorie reduction might be too much.  I'm anxious to see how my body responds in the Optimum Anabolics program.  I will use the food menu generator part of the program, though.  Probably one of its greatest strengths.

Z!
There is definitely an improvement with the waist line. If you can knock of just a little (Maybe 1 inch) more you will have a “V” showing pretty clearly (You have naturally wide shoulders). I really wouldn’t worry about the chest too much right now (I think its way overrated!). BUT I would try to pack on some meat on the back and traps. Again that would help with the “V” more then the chest I think.
You started in July correct?
How much weight have you lost?
What are you at right now?
What is your next month goal?
What is your goal for X-Mas?

Cheers
