Date: 07/24/2006 Objective: Hypertrophy Split Designation: Pull (Back, Rear Delts, Biceps) Today's workout was so embarassing, I don't even want to log it. As far as I'm concerned, it never happened. Total carb and creatine depletion, thanks to a week of being a s**t. Serves me right Well, dust yourself off, and start again. I noticed I've been posting this revival for a full month already. Time flies

Don't beat yourself up too much. Lift your shirt up and look in the mirror. You are the envy of many men. Be glad you did your routine today. You're already picking yourself up. Congrats!

Thanks, G! You're like my tireless voice of perspective Check it: In seven days, I will celebrate my 1 year aniversary back in the gym. I'm always remarking that "I can't believe a whole year has passed since blah blah blah", but I can't bring myself to say that about bodybuilding. The more I think about how much s**t I put myself through this past year, the more it dawns on me that the next twelve months aren't going to be any easier. Jeeziz, it's gonna be a lot of work Anything worth having, right? I can feel myself starting to dread it, so I'm going over to Primo Italiano right now and eat meal #5 for today. I may have thrown the workouts under the bus last week, but I'm not letting up on the diet one BIT!

AAaarrrrrrgggghhh!!! I just came back from fitday.com, where I just found out all the food I'm cramming down my throat is nowhere close to the 3,000 calories per day I'm supposed to be eating. Looks like it's BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD AGAIN! FFFFF.... aw, nevermind! I'm effing exhausted

It's going to be real tough considering you are a vegan who wants to gain mass. Everybody points to a few well-knowns like Bill Pearl and such but nobody seems to talk about how dedicated those guys were to eat all the foods necessary to sustain that lifestyle AND build muscle. Personally you look good for what you've done and where you've been. It is a LOT of food to eat in order to his 3000 calories on a vegan style bodybuilding diet. I have a current outline of a plan at 2100 calories for a vegan and it's a lot of food. You really need to increase the quantities of food to hit 3000. Personally, it's harder in my opinion than a meat eater because of the AMOUNT of food required to reach that caloric level. Am I wrong Vegg?

With all the eggs and dairy that I incorporate into my diet, I can get all 200g of protein in three simple meals a day if I bother to cook, and they typically aren't that filling. But then you gotta add 350g of carbs on top of that (which is really what I've been neglecting up to this point), and 89g of fat too! The weird part is, I've always thought I was being REALLY sloppy with my fat intake, and STILL, I'm getting less than 50g a day! Every time I've successfully reached that point where I was gaining muscle every week, it came with stuffing myself to near discomfort at least three-times a day, with the rest of the day filled with non-stop grazing. It really is a pain in the ass to keep eating like that. 3000 calories (at 26/26/48 p/f/c respectively) translates to 6 1/2 POUNDS of dry nutrient weight! When you add in the incedental and deliberate water, it's over TEN POUNDS of food and water per day! That's gotta be a full-time job for anyone -not just veggilantes.

Incedentally, I said "not entirely wrong" because I'm really not a vegan. By definition, vegans abstain from all animal-derived foods and household products. I, on the other hand, eat eggs (mostly egg whites), milk (in my lattes -can't stand it straight anymore), whey protein supplements (which we all know comes from cow's milk), cheese, and honey. Yes, vegan purists even consider honey exploitive. I'm also stepping all over vegan ethics by wearing leather belts (though I bought my Doc Martens from vegetarianshoes.com and gave all my leather jackets to Goodwill), and silk shirts & ties. Eff 'em if they can't take a joke, right If I were to fall back strictly on plant-based protein sources, I'm sure it would increase the volume, but I'm not sure by how much. Plus, it goes to my earlier point about just how much protein is really necessary for muscle growth. I have a hunch 200g/day is probably obscenely excessive in the long run.

I have a hunch 200g/day is probably obscenely excessive in the long run. 1.0g per lb of body weight is a pretty good standard. There's been several studies done on less than that and way over that... Under makes a difference of course for a person who's trying to build muscle. But way over like 2.0g and such doesn't seem to do anything much at all really. You could go with 1 - 1.5g per lb of body weight. But you are correct. It may be excessive given your current situation. Personally, as long as I'm at least 1.0g per lb of my body weight, I feel good, I build muscle and it's all good. Beyond that, and there's other "bowl" issues I don't think are good, some discomfot and really, I've not notice the slightest difference in consuming well beyond the "golden" standard. There's room to play around of course (powerlifting, endurance, general fitness, bodybuilding) but excessive protein intake doesn't seem to enhance your ability to build muscle. Not saying it's bad for you either. But the muscle building isn't there. You could probably stand more carbs and fats as you stated.

Its all about what you feel, who cares what others think Precisely At first, I started getting sucked up in the ethics issues -nowadays, they just inform my thinking -they don't dictate it. At the end of the day, I'm a human being with the capacity to be as indifferent as I want, and if anyone suffers the consequences of my indifference, well... can't see it from my house! HA HA HA HA! That's pretty callous, I know, but I believe very strongly in choosing one's battles. In the long run, I'm not making a world of difference for cows and chickens and pigs by abstaining from eating meat; but the key to making conservation work is to think beyond yourself. There's only so much of that selflessness I'm willing to endure, ya know? I'm not Ghandi. quote:
You could go with 1 - 1.5g per lb of body weight. But you are correct. It may be excessive given your current situation. I started out with the 1g/Lb standard, but I thought that since I'll be shifting the focus off of the whey protein for the next 6 months and increasing my plant-based proteins more, it would make sense to increase the volume to compensate for the reduced bioavailability. That may be entirely unnecessary, for all I know. As for the unhealthy aspects of eating too much protein, I believe there indeed are some noteworthy side effects -and I'd like to see more research done on them. Specifically, the acidifying consequences of all that nitrogen floating around in your bloodstream. A lot of health practitioners are coming to the conclusion that excess nitrogen in the diet can precipitate osteoporosis. Not the effect I was going for quote:
Did you read the article Nav posted on Protein cycling? Its pretty interesting. No, I didn't see that... but I have read his tirades when he follows that plan, HA HA HA HA! I can't say I'm glad Nav is such an unashamed carrion-addict, but maybe it's just best to let some kitties keep their steak.

My God. What's got into me these days? I can barely summon the will to work out, and when I do, I'm too lazy to post the results here. I had three very productive workouts this week (but I felt like I was fighting myself the whole time -I hate that). But I just don't feel like logging them. I'm hoping my motivation will come back when this hot weather starts to taper off. I'm still tied with Linky for gains, tho. So nothing changes.
