Date: 07/12/2006 Objective: Hypertrophy Split Designation: Legs Exercise Sets (Weight/Reps*) Squats 230/10 230/10 240/10 250/10 260/10 300/.10 Hamstring Curl 85/10 85/10 85/10 85/11 85/11 Standing Calf Raise 260/20 260/20 260/20 260/20 DB Lunge 30/10 30/10 30/10 30/10 *Decimal values represent partial reps (ex 8.4 = eight full reps + four partial reps) Notes: This was essentially a repeat of my last leg workout, with a few minor increases here and there. I kept my promise not to start my squats off with anything below 230, but repeated the same poundages from last time, with the same awesome, mind-blowing results. Hammies were still a little sloppy on set 4 & 5, so I'm going to hold here for now. I also noticed, after watching video of me doing hamstring curls, that I'm coming up off the bench too far -so clearly, my form needs some improvement on this exercise. I dropped SCR's back to 20 reps and focused on stricter form with 260. Suffice to say, I think I'm wasting my time doing these after squats, because I'm still seeing too much assist from my quads, and I never feel like I've really stimulated my calves. I need to improvise a calf isolation solution. Still dealing with my shin injury issue, so no leg extensions today -I substituted DB lunges again, and once again, I brough tmyself practically to tears with the pain. Mmmmmmmm... So niiiice! Tomorrow is another insufferable rest day. Let the nail-biting begin.

Today is a day off I hate days off... BUT, they are necessary! So I'm going to borrow a page from Nav's book and go find *something else* to do... Maybe twice. I KNOW! I'll go score a pair of lifting straps! 'Cause God knows I'm gonna need them to attempt deadlifts at the END of tomorrow's back workout Besides, I need a new pair of gloves too... I left my last ones in my Jeep by mistake and they got rained on -turned completely moldy Now, here's the tricky part: I'm trying to talk myself into going to the beach this weekend with the Jeep and my dog, but I'd be missing out on my next two workouts . Let's see... stay home and do laundry, and get all three workouts, or go to the beach and cruise all the hot, bikini-clad trim with my shirt off, the top down, and the radio thumpin'... So, I guess the real question is, should I bring windsurfer trunks or board shorts?

Milos would know. He is the Man. I've always thought that too. If you aren't squeezing the holy hell out of a muscle when you contract it under load, you're wasting your time. But there is at least one scientific principle at play behind the idea of working with the heaviest weight you can: it is believed that muscle motor units are recruited for contraction based on their dominant fiber type, and that the motor units comprised mainly of Type IIx (fast twitch) fibers -the largest and most capable of huge growth- don't kick in at all until after you've recruited all of your Type I and Type IIa fibers, in that order. The theory is that working with weight at or beyond 70% of your maximum exhausts those smaller Type I "endurance" fibers to the point where they scream for help from the larger Type IIa "power" fibers, which in turn scream for help from the Type IIx "Mac Daddy" fibers. All of this happens very rapidly, of course -like in the span of six or seven repetitions of any resistance exercise, depending on the weight used. The chain of screaming rolls uphill, like a chain of command. If you don't hit at least 70% of the work capability of your smallest fibers, they aren't going to risk getting their butts chewed out by waking up the strongest and largest fibers (when they weren't needed). Anyone who works in a Network Operations Center knows this as the "chain of escalation". The guy at the help desk is a Type I fiber, there to take lots and lots of flak from customers, until the problem supersedes his ability to handle it; then the Type I fiber techie can make a call to his Type IIa Tier-two support techie, who will assist. But if The Type I fiber techie just picks up the phone and calls the Type IIx Vice President of the department fiber without a really good reason to do so, he's gonna get his butt chewed. I'm guessing that Milos is onto something here by pointing out that you can indeed turn most moderate-weight exercises into maximal efforts by contracting the muscle waaaaay beyond what is absolutely necessary to perform the lift.

Science aside, Milos' results--on him and his proteges--speak volumes of why, even if there wasn't a plausible scientific explanation, it's worth a shot. I mean, damn!

HA HA HA HA! Would you believe I completely forgot you said you work in a NOC when I went off on that analogy? That's called serendipity! (actually, some call it s**tty short-term memory, LOL!) Anyway, now I'm glad I went there, 'cause I know you can relate to that one

There is a total stud (I mean, stud, he could have the ego if he wanted) who workouts at my gym. His weights are always low compared to some of the other (less studly, smaller) guys. 30# dumbbells as the max weight for 20" biceps (that's what they look like). Probably a combination of freaky genetics and knowing something we don't know.

Ooooo... BUSTED! Sorry 'bout that. I hit a bit of an existential speed bump this weekend. I flaked on Friday, and somehow that turned into "blow off the whole set". Sucks how that happens. Hot & Cold, I tell ya. I put in a few reps of this and that on Saturday and Sunday, but nothing worth logging. Just had a bummer crapsicle of a weekend. That's a'ight tho -'tis a new week.

I'm a little concerned veg....you might be working out a little too hard. It appears that it's made you start talking to yourself......or even worse.....writing to yourself!

My bad I got to chatting with Nic & Clive last night, and I completely forgot to log the workout I did yesterday. No tears, please... Save them for your leg workouts This last week was kinda screwy, and for no good reason. First time I flaked since the begining of July, but I'm over stressing about a few missed days now. Next week will be the last week in my current six-month bulking cycle, and I will finish it well below target. This past six months has been a proverbial mixed bag of dissapointments, and I didn't make anywhere NEAR the progress I was planning to. So, no biggie. I'm gonna take it like a man and re-tool for phase three. The nice part is, I had such great results from working out through the fall and colder months of December and January, that I'm thinking it will be much easier to stay focused for phase three. Once the weather warms up, my mind is elsewhere. Working out and following a weekly plan with religious fervor last year kept me out of my typical seasonal depression, and really helped pass the time. Now, even though I still feel the same (confidence and self image-wise) as I did last year, at least I'm going into Phase three with 20 more pounds of lean mass on my scrawny ass. I was too conservative with phase two, and I'll be keeping that in mind for the next step.
