Powerlifting Competition - Friday, March 26, 2004 12:47 PM
Hey All,

There is going to be a power lifting competition in May at the gym we work out at. It will be myself, pwolf66, and mduble all part of the event.

It will be a percent type event, but my personal goal is the total pounds moved. I have some lofty goals for myself, but I think I can make them. Here are the numbers I hope to get out:

Squat 400
Bench 275
Deadlift 245???
Current weight is 245

I do not work deads regularly, so I hope to at least do body weight. Only time will tell. I just know I am big time psyked for this.

Current Max Weights:

Deadlift 505

My goal is to get to 1400 total for the 3 lifts

Sounds cool- You know, if you got comfortable with doing deadlifts, you should be able to do way more than 245- You squat 400. Add some weight to your deadlifts, and you'll break 1000 pounds between all three lifts.

Unfortunately I will be limited in my squat to about 250 or so. Could probably grunt out 450 if I could go heavy between now and then but I can't

Deadlift I'm shooting for 450 so we'll see

Bench I hope to be around 315, I should get there.

What's up with the squats? Why can't you go heavy with them, but you're shooting for 450 with deadlifts?

Still having issues with the C7/T1 area of my spine and can't vertically load that area with out support, i.e can't put a lot of weight on the bar during a squat.

Sorry to hear it- I remember you posting somewhere else about it now... What's the word on that anyway? Any time frame on a full recovery, or is that something you're going to have to deal with long term?

Well, I would love to get the deadlifts up, but I just have not been working it. I am making an effort to work them in now, so I will have to see how it goes. I would love to hit 1000 lbs.

Very cool. Seems like a lot of people are finding local competitions. That is pretty sweet!

I just started deadlifts. Man.. that is some intense stuff. I'm thinking of backing down the weight until I get used to it. I was shooting for cpl weights but no way. Straps do help but I'm afraid that if I do not work up to it, I'll be down for the count.

I'm okay on squats and bench but deadlifts.. that is just something that I wish I did earlier. Although stiff leg deadlifts have helped a lot with strengthening the lower back.

I will of couse expect a full write up.

You know we wil let you know all the juicy details.

Well, my deadlifts went OK yesterday, I just need to focus on proper form. We were informed yesterday that the event would run like a standard event, in that there will be no pads, gloves, or straps. I tried my squats today without the pad, and under the scrutiny of the gym manager, with great success. The bar felt fine and I even raised my working weight to 325. I think 400 will be solid for the event, maybe even 425.

More to come.

Pwolf66 and myself were doing 1 reps with deadlift and I was successful with 295. I guess I was selling myself a little short on this one. I guess my new goal for the competition will be around 315-325. I think a have a real shot at 1000 lbs for the 3 lifts.

Not a bad goal to shoot for- I figured you were selling yourself short. I'll be breaking the thousand pound mark myself soon.

Well I think it is a good goal for me at this stage. My weight is between 242-244 right now so that would put me at around a 4:1 ratio. I know that there will be people that smoke that ratio, but as a recovering Hostess-posterboy it works for me.

...News Flash...

New one rep on Deadlifts: 315. I have still not effectively worked on this exercise, so I am quite encouraged as to my potential for the event. I may give the 405 mark a try on squat tomorrow. We shall see.
