Numb feeling - Tuesday, June 06, 2006 6:35 PM
Okay I have had this numb kind of feeling in my right hand for about 3 days. My hand is cool and feels like I slept the wrong way, but I didn't because if I did this wouldn't last a few days. Its still going on and I wonder what I should do to get the feeling back in my right hand. This is strange. Any ideas.

Could be nerve damage?  Pinched nerve?

3 days is long enough that if it was temporary... it should have gone away.  Might mention this to a DR.

Nerve damage, I don't think I have really heard of that. I think if it persists I really should see a doctor. As Im typing I can't feel my right hand especially the pinkie finger on it. How could I have pinched a nerve?

Thanks alot for your help.

Doesn't matter how right now . . . get thee to a medical professional ASAP.  Don't mess with this stuff.  It could be nothing, it could be something.  If it's nothing now, it could become something later.  At the least, call the doc and tell him/her what's going on!  It's a lousy phone call.  Please do it.

Sorry to hear that, but the good thing is it could have been worse as well.

I have had alot of employee's turn out to have carple tunnel.

First I would take the brace very seriously, after a few months of use they didnt have to use the brace any more and the pain and numbness went away, but it sounds like your not to the shooting pain point which is good (It happend to them because they ignored the numbness and it got worse). Either way listen to your doc and use the brace for as long as he advises.

I would also look into your ergonomics at work/school/home as this can be the catalyst of the problem. Make sure you have your keyboard/mouse at proper levels like on top of a table and things such as that.

As for working out I have no idea, that would be someone elses area to answer

That means its probably in the starting stages with no shooting pain. It may be possible that when you are working your arms that because you left arm is stronger than your right arm that you right arm is using all of the muscles in the arm to work, such as pull dows, the left may be not suing other muscle groups as much but the right probably is using the forearms alot more. Do you use lifting straps?

Are you saying I may not have carpal tunnel? because I do wrist curls with lots of weight and I strain ALOT. Also the doctor was some old fart and seemed like he didn't know what he was talking about.

No I wasnt implying that, sorry. Carpal tunnel is  a repetative motion injury. I would imagine that curling and weight lifting could be considerd a repetative motion. The lifting may be what the catalyst is. The way you lift may be the catalyst of the injury and you may want to start looking there to fix it so it doesnt get worse again. It could be something as simple as taking the weights down a bit so your not using your fore arms as much and you are working the actual target muscle you want to work, or try some straps on certian things. I know lat pulldowns and seated rows were killing my forearms, to the point that my back wasnt feeling the workout, I asked around and was told try the straps and now I can lift more that I was before and my fore arms dont have the exploding feeling in my fore arms during the sets.

Always listen to your doc over all, if you feel he may be wrong get a second doctors opinion they go to years of school for what they do.

If you treat carpal tunnel syndrome like a passing thing, you'll end up with acute tendonitis, and then you'll be out of the game for months. Don't mess with stuff like that. Slow down your arm workouts. Try super slow strength training, and for the love of god, don't wank righty!

getting big over the summer may be an important goal, but it seems to be short-term, if you don't take carpal tunnel seriously it can get a lot worse. I have it from playing guitar and bass for many years, as well as lifting weights. If it starts hurting, pay attention. Get a brace and back off the weights for a while. I ignored the pain doing curls and some other exercises a couple years ago and had to completely stop for a while because it got so bad. It's actually gotten better over the past couple of years so I don't even have pain on curls, though I do use a machine for it now. Just listen to your body and you should be good.
