Yes this post I found to be very informative.  I've had people tell me all sorts of things that I found sort of shaky, and this post proved them wrong.  In particular that you have to eat a lot if you want to gain lean mass.  More and more I'm finding that a healthy diet and a strong dedication are what is needed for success.  I can't speak to many specifics, because I am a beginner so I'm here to learn.  I feel lucky to have found this site with so many dedicated and knowledgable posters.

wow, this was an informative post.

honestly though, i'm a bit confused and am now wondering if im working out all wrong.

my program calls for 4 days with 1 &3 and 2&4 being the same. me and my friend have been doing 1-monday 2-tuesday day off 3-thursday 4- fri. often, i still have some soreness from monday on thursday, etc. am I overtraining?

would it be appropriate for me to post my regimen to get some advice. I got the program from a book, and so have had no personal advice.

thanks.

Hi, I'm new to this. Been working out about six months now. Found this post very interesting. I've just read 'Mike Mentzers High Intensit Workout' which backs up the problems of over-training. However, I do find it strange being in the gym so infrequently after following his workout principles. Has anyone else read this?

Great post.  One point that caught my eye since it's the one thing that got me past my plateau was the one that mentioned periodization.  In explaining it, a lot of people's eyes glaze over, but staggering high intensity, medium intensity, and low intensity workouts, allowing sufficient rest for each affected muscle group, is the best way to train.

OK im brand new to weight lifting. im 21 and have been lifting about 2 weeks. ive just subscribed to muscle and fitness magazine and i am very confused. some of their workout principals do not agree with the original post. mainly about high reps making you get ripped. in their most current issue they have a "get ripped" program that emphisizes high reps. if this is false then what is the point in high rep workouts? also they mention something about undulating periodization. this is supposed to confuse your muscles by means of random cycling of weight and rep ranges from one workout to another. they suggest this method is truely better than linear periodization. is this true?

also do you know of any good books or magz for begginers. i dont really know if what im reading is correct or if its all bs. thanx

Im 35 and just began working out about 5 months ago.I was working out 5 days a week and did not seem to be getting anywhere.I read an article similar to this one and decided to try a 3 day workout. Its working for me.That plus getting plenty of sleep and using good multivitamins have shot me to a whole new level.I workout on Mon-Wed-Fri.It seems to really help if I do all my leg workouts on Fri.I guess the extra day off is needed if you work your legs properly.May not work for anyone else but like I said its worked well for me.

The more you work out, the more you'll grow.
No, no no. This is one of the most damaging myths that ever reared its ugly head. 95% of the pros will tell you that the biggest bodybuilding mistake they ever made was to over-train--and this happened even when they were taking steroids. Imagine how easy it is for the natural athlete to overtrain! When you train your muscles too often for them to heal, the end-result is zero growth and perhaps even losses. Working out every day, if you're truly using the proper amount of intensity, will lead to gross overtraining. A body part, worked properly, i.e. worked to complete, total muscular failure that recruited as many muscle fibers as physiologically possible, can take 5-10 days to heal.

To take it a step further, even working a different body part in the next few days might constitute overtraining. If you truly work your quads to absolute fiber-tearing failure, doing another power workout the next day that entails heavy bench-presses or deadlifts is going to, in all probability, inhibit gains. After a serious leg workout, your whole system mobilizes to heal and recover from the blow you've dealt it. How, then, can the body be expected to heal from an equally brutal workout the next day? It can't, at least not without using some drugs to help deal with the catabolic processes going on in your body [and even they're usually not enough .]

Learn to accept rest as a valuable part of your workout. You should probably spend as many days out of the gym as you do in it.

I'm not to sure about this one. I heard that if you work out a mucsle group then allow a one full day of rest the heal is enough to get a good workout the next day. I found that the closer my workouts were the greater my gains were as long as i left at lest one day for rest. In my physcial education class they say one day is all you need
