I weigh 173 and 255 is also the most I've pressed, although right now I'm probably a little weaker than that....I'm cutting right now so If I could weigh 160-165 and still be able to press that much, I'd be happy

I'm 23, 5'7"

I'll throw in here for the heck of it.

Been lifting since Nov 10, 2003

Age: 37
Weight: 287
Height: 6'3"

Max bench: 305

Going for the triple next week 315 is going UP!!!!!

Guy in our security department:

Age:27
Weight:240
Height:6'3

Max Bench: 480, Squat 740

This is no crap, this guy wears a sweater and I can walk behind him and name muscle groups, he's a rock. He'll be hitting the Redskins training camp this spring in hope of getting on the team, plus he's a heck of a nice guy.

Still.. I wouldn't make him mad.

740 lb squat? And I ****about 315 lbs? Jesus.. I bet he'd be a good spotter. You could do whatever and you know he's got your back.

He estimated the squat as he regularly works out with anywhere between 400-450.

Let's see, a weight ratio of 1.73 bench press to body weight, I'd call that good.

What's the average ratio? 1.5?

I have no idea but I would be very surprised if the average was that high, I would expect that untrained would fall somewhere around .7 to 1 and then ramp up from there, with powerlifters hitting anywhere from 3 to 5 depending. Mine's pretty sad, relatively speaking, at about 1.1 but that's cause I've still got 50 pounds to lose

I'm reviewing a book called Critical Bench

First impression was WOW! So I'll give more details once I go over it a couple more times. One thing I will comment on is that principles that are explained to maximize the bench are great. So I applied them to my arm day today as Monday was chest.

I broke a nice record on dumbbell curls. So I'm really excited to try out this thing on benching and see if I can break my lifetime max of 280.

I will. I've read it over once. I want to read it a couple more times. Then I'm going to do it for the 12 weeks. just modifying my routine for benching. All other body parts will stay Max-OT.

You've been talking so much about benching that once I read this I was.. man.. boyrancher is gonna like this!

I just want to re-read it and make sure I understand it before I give my impression.

And then it will take a bit of time after that.. to say not only did I read it but I did it... and...

i've lose interest in benching. It used to be my favorite thing to do, now its boring. My favorite things to do are biceps with the cable cross overs, and my favorite muscle are my lats, so I like to build those up to.

Well it is not much, but here goes:

Age: 33
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 245
Max: 255

I would like to get myself to at least the 275 mark before softball starts. Once upon a time, I could push some real weight. I may be older, but I think I am a little smarter.

We'll see...

I don't think the critical bench book will be free to donaters, boyrancher.
You know, after reading a bunch of your posts, it sounds like you could use a good, solid week off from training- Eat even more than you normally eat, and just let your body recover a little.

I'm assuming you were listing your max bench weight here- Not bad at all.
Guys, I hate to have to point this out, but if we're going to do a thread like this, how about we throw in something other than bench weight? So far, I believe MDA is the only guy from here who's posted something other than bench- I thought this was a bodybuilding site! I mean, all the guys I know who don't work out are always asking how much I can bench, and I try to tell them all the time that it's actually exercises like squats and deadlifts that demand the most from your body. The non- bodybuilding world seems somewhat obsessed with bench weight, as if it were a measure of overall strength- Which it isn't. Not that I'm against posting what you can bench, it's good to display the goals you've reached and all that, but we do get a lot of beginners here- If they read this thread, they might continue to buy into the misconception that the bench press is the best measure of strength, and continue to ignore their legs and back... Anyway, since I'm the one pointing this out, I'll post my numbers...
28 years old
5'7" 192 pounds
Squat- 367 pounds
deadlift- 330 pounds
(These weights are what I use for reps, I've never tried my one rep max.)
Let's see some more numbers here!

As a somewhat beginner I can say than one of the most discouraging things that there is, is to think that if you can't bench 200lbs plus you should be embarrassed to go to the gym. I don't think this thread is helping.

Do not, repeat, DO NOT, get discouraged by what other people post. There is so much you don't know about those numbers, how long have they been lifting, body types, natural strength but more importantly.....

THIS IS NOT ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE CAN DO THIS IS ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DO!!!!!!!

It's between you and the iron, there's nobody else involved. nada, zip, zero. So if lifterX can bench a zillion pounds, so what? Does it directly affect you, other than a HOLY **** reaction? No, then don't focus on it, use it for positive stimulus, yes, but don't dwell on it.

Actually, I would think that if you can't bench at least your bodyweight you should be embarassed if you DON'T hit the gym

But what ever you do, you must realize this, lifting/bodybuilding, heck just maintaining a healthy lifestyle is all about YOU and what you're doing, not what someone else does. So keep setting those short term goals and you WILL reach them.

Sorry for the sermon.
