Best Protein for the money? - Thursday, December 01, 2005 9:22 AM
Hey guys. Looking for opinions on the best protein for the money. I only need to take in between 120-150 grams of protein per day so I was wondering whats a good deal in terms of protein and what the cheapest places to get supplements are. I've looked into isopure but its jsut so expensive, looking for something a little cheaper becuase I'm definitely not made of money. Also, this protein needs to be low-fat as I'm probably going to be starting a fatburning stack and I need as little fat coming in as possible. thx

If your willing to spend $30 dollars on a protien which will be the best damn protien taste in your life, then i would go with nectar protien

go to ww.si03.com  ( the 03 part are numbers zero and three)

click on store, and scroll down to the nectar protien section, and you will see what type of flavors they have.  I have never tasted protien like nectar protien.  All those other protiens out there with generic flavors like "strawbery" "vanilla" "choclate" totally pale in comparison to the taste of nectar protien.  Before you buy it, you can email them and request sample flavor packets for all of their flavors, and they can mail it to you.
Keep in mind that is just whey protien.

I personally think that you will also need CASIEN protien, which is a slow absorbing protien.  It takes up to 7 hours to digest all of casien protien, and that is a perfect protien supplement for night time to continue to help you build muscle.  Unfortunatley, i am not aware of any casien protien that tastes that great, so i just bought the choclate flavor one.

Go to your local supplement discount stores (EXCEPT GNC, CAUSE I PERSONALLY THINK GNC SUCKS) to see if they have such products

On 100% Whey is pretty much the standard on the board If your looking for really good protien for cheap. I'm taking muscle milk right now but I'm gonna switch back to ON 100% Whey because I'm spending to much on the muscle milk. It's pretty much the best for the money, there won't be much dispute over that here.

I'm gonna agree with him on the on 100% whey.  Pretty cheap, and a lotta servings.  I mix one scoop of that with one scoop muscle milk.  Helps the muscle milk last longer and tastes great.

I have done alot of pricing research and ON Whey has one of the two best prices I have found.

I am alergic to artificial flavors and so most proteins are out for me anyway.

5 pounder of ON for around $30 shipped seems to be a favorite..I have not used it yet, but will be buying soon as my supply is running low...then I'll know how it is compared to others.

Not me...that stuff has artificial flavors..which could mean MSG...which means it messes with your insulin levels...no way!

Dang Buffwannabe  That Nektar is all artificial colors and flavours too!!
Too bad for me.

Goldenfrog you'll have to tell me what you think.  I had a bad egg protein year, sure it was my fault cause I was so new to everything...and I would over mix it and use too much...uck..so I have had a bad prejudice!
This is Free of c**p!  Wow!

There's a whey protein sold at Sam's Club that's around 18 bucks for a 5lbs jug. 103 servings with 16 grams of protein per serving. it's called Cytosport 100% whey protein. don't know if it stacks up to ON whey's protein but it'd be 206 servings if you bought two jugs for $32 total

Lets do the math
ON
72 servings x 22g protein=1584g protein for $30

Sams
103 servings x16g protein=1648g protein for $20

Sams wins the price comparison.

So it all depends what else is in there...flavorings, colorings, etc. and on the fat and carbs.
For instance ON has  No Aspartame and No Artificial Colors, Flavors or Sweeteners.

Then lets look at quality...and since most tested whey proteins passed independent lab tests for protein quality (testing for total calories, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, fat, sodium and cholesterol)-(although ON and Designer whey under-report the amount of cholesterol found in their product, and a few others have more sodium than reported...)

So then it comes down to how well it works for you and how you like it.

If the contents were ok I would go with it.

go to supplementdirect and you can buy 11lbs of whey concentrate, 26g protein per serving for about $38, best price out there. It may seem like it might not work because its so cheep, but I have baught all my supps from that site and I've currently gained 10lbs in the first 3.5 weeks of my bulk.

gators52...How many servings in that and which type is it?
Oh, and can you even open their website?  I could not.

I got it.

Yea gators52 that is pretty much the best price I have ever seen.

That is 0.81 cents per gram of protein- that saves about 12-30 cents or more per shake.

Natural ON is 1.89 cents per gram of protein
Sams is 1.21 cents per gram of protein

So, G you say you use this whey and are happy with it.

Also..are there any artificial ingredients ...because they don't list the ingredients just the lab testing info.

Thanks for pointing it out gator!

Actually it does show the ingrediants. When you see the product on the page, instead of clicking on the link where it says name of the product, click the more info link. Then from there you can click on a blue link called "nutritional information" which is a photocopy of that actual label on the bag of protein. Fill me in if any of that stuff is too bad for you. It's not flavored so there isn't any of that kind of artificial stuff in there. Yep I'm happy with it, I've used expensive GNC whey a couple years back and no difference.

Whoa...their shippin is a pretty penny!
So this is what I found:

With the shipping the 5 pound bag is 1.53 cents per gram of protein.

The 11 pound bag runs 1.11 Cents per gram of protein
But the 33 pound bag runs around 0.8 cents per gram of protein.

I ordered a 5 pound bag (USD$28.25 with shipping)...last me 2 months +-...if its a good product...I will report.

NOTE...This product is

  • Ion-exchange purified whey — This is the most pure of all the whey proteins, but may have reduced immunostimulant properties due to chemical processing.

as compared to

  • Whey isolates — These products are purified without the use of heat. Thus, they still contain the potentially beneficial immunostimulant constituents (immunoglobulins) of whey. Whey protein "isolates" are typically lower in lactose, fat, and cholesterol than regular whey protein.
  • Whey hydrosolates — Essentially this is pre-digested protein that is assimilated into the body more quickly than other, non-hydrolyzed types. This is well suited for use after exercise because of the increased bioavailability of the pre-digested protein. Also, because these products are pre-digested, less energy is needed to digest them.

Is 5lbs Cytosport Complete whey for 29 USD decent? free shipping.  And is it tasty enough? like Straw/banana, choc or vanilla

About 1.6 cents per gram of protein
I think thats a good price.

I don't like the artificial ingredients myself.  I do this to be healthy.

Acesulfame Potassium is on the 10 worst artificial sweeteners list put out by (CSPI) Center for Science in the Public Interest and it has been found to cause cancer in clinical tests...in addition to all the other problems with it.

Sucralose/Splenda...you don't even want to go there...What exactly is Splenda?
In a simple sentence, you would just as soon have a pesticide in your food as sucralose because sucralose (Splenda) is a chlorocarbon. The chlorocarbons have long been known for causing organ, genetic, and reproductive damage. It should be no surprise, therefore, that the testing of sucralose reveals that it can cause up to 40 percent shrinkage of the thymus: a gland that is the very foundation of our immune system. Sucralose also causes swelling of the liver and kidneys, and CALCIFICATION of the kidney. Note: if you experience kidney pain, cramping, or an irritated bladder after using sucralose in Splenda, stop use immediately.

Some questions about sucralose's safety, arising from the data submitted to the FDA, remain unanswered. These studies included unsettling findings about animals, which, when exposed to high doses of sucralose, experienced:
  • Shrunken thymus and spleen
  • Enlarged liver and kidneys
  • Reduced growth rate in adults and newborns

Is that what you want to supplement your diet with...not me.
