Need help please - Sunday, August 07, 2005 6:47 PM
Hi
did a search on google for forums and this one popped up and it seems like a really good one.
anyways, i'm 18 years old, weigh a 130 pounds  no where near buff or fat beacause of my fast metabolism,i started working out around 3-4 weeks ago, bought a 42 pack vanilla myoplex(42grams of protein per serving)......i go to the gym every other day...on the days that i DO workout i take one serving when i wake up and one after workout(4-5 pm) when i get home. and on the days that i don't work out, i don't take any servings. sooo.......
am i doing this whole thing wrong?

how many grams of protein should i take daily? how many servings? what about the days that i don't work out?
i'd appreciate any help.
--jp

P.S. 90% of the time i work out biceps and triceps.......since i started working out, my goal was to get kinda buff.....and although i can feel that my arms have gotten bigger, i lost like 6 pounds, 4 weeks ago i was 136 and now i'm 130...ist his normal or am doing something wrong?
thx

RE: Need help please - Sunday, August 07, 2005 6:56 PM
you sound like me when i first began, you cant bulk working just arms, you need to work everything

dont work out every other day, instead work an individual muscle or 2 muscles every day, until all muscles have been done for the week-and rest

for example
monday-back/biceps
tuesday-leg/triceps
wednesday-chest/shoulders
thursday-lats,abs
friday-rest
saturday-rest
sunday-rest

you dont HAVE to rest that much, but get 1 day in MINIMUM of rest, never work a sore muscle

you want to intake 1-1.5 grams of protein of your lean mass

your 130lbs
so intake about 150grams a day, try to never go under 100, and have this 150grams in 30 grams increments, between 5-6 meals a day (medium sized meals, or big-if your stomach can handle it, you wanna bulk, eat like a monster)

good sources of protein are fish, eggs, chicken, nuts and any red meat, make sure to get plenty of carbs, 300 grams a day id say for you, use oats mainly if you can, and pasta or rice, and them type of foods.

While it doesnt build muscle fruits and vegetables are also very important as they keep the body going, and will run in unison with everything else to get the body to the max.

Not only that but DRINK water, loads of it, keep your body cleansed and cycling with water.

Hope this helps, and welcome to DB.com

wow, thank you so much
a couple of more question if you don't mind.

should i take proteins on the days that i don't workout?(Rest days)

also, i've heard that benching stunts your growth so i have only benched once in my entire life and that was a year ago(115lbs) so i guess that goes for all chest workouts, therefore i never work out my chest or shoulders? is that bad?.....and/or am i wrong?

Shakes: yes have them the days that you dont workout.  Benching does not stunt your growth, either do the military press.
ps  you shouldnt be doing shoulders for your bench, just use chest:::   http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/likness5.htm

Hmmmm im surprised someone told you chest workouts stunt growth...

Usually the most popular exercise for stunting frowth are back exercises like the deadlift....odd

Anyway yeah as bigmike said take em on rest days too

thx for the replies bigmike and twistedlink

...so from i understand benching doesn't stunt your growth and if i should take 150 grams of protein every day, no matter if i work out or not....what do you guys think of the following...?

monday-back/biceps
tuesday-leg/triceps
wednesday-chest/shoulders
thursday-lats,abs
friday-back/biceps
saturday-rest
sunday-rest

monday-leg/triceps
tuesday-chest/shoulders

etc.

is that too much resting?

RE: Need help please - Tuesday, August 09, 2005 5:16 AM
Two week cycling routine...

Each to there own.

Anyway, No, that is a nice amount of rest, muscle ONLY grows when being rested, everything you do at your gym is actually destroying muscle (not major amounts, only micro tears as i heard somewhere here which is a good way of putting it)

Then when you rest, the muscle repairs, and while repairing it makes the muscle a little bigger and stronger.

In actual fact your routine might be better than the usual 1 set week routines people have here, as it will shock your body, and it wont know whats its going to get next.

Always give a muscle group you have worked at least 3 days rest, and make sure you have a day or two of whole body rest and just do nothing.

I see you have taken my exact muscle groups from my example and will be using them....Im not exactly errr....an expert on best routines, you MIGHT have to edit them a bit, some exercises working in unison with others bring about better results, if you do have any negative effects with the routine or muscle groups working together, just change it around a bit.

BTW my last post was misleading, i said the most popular exercise to stunt growth was the deadlift

I meant the most popular exercise that APPARENTLY stunts growth is the deadlift, it in actual fact does not, unless (i think) it is done before you hit puberty, and you do it HEAVILY.

so ya, i'm pretty sure i'm not going to be doing the deadlift anytime soon.

but i'll do the example/routine you showed above and if it dosn't work i'll swtich it around a bit.

thx for all the replies everyone

lol...you dont have to start off with 3 massive tyres on the deadlift, i doubt anyone apart from a few people on this forum could deadlift that weight!

Start at your own level, trying to lift weights too heavy will make poor results, even if the weights are small, use perfect form, you make gains very fast when beginning so you wont have that ego clipped forever.

As twisted said its not too much resting.  What i dont like is that you have legs with triceps, you keep upper body with upper body and lower body wit hlower body.  Sowhat i would do is keep biceps with back or chest or triceps with chest or back.  Doesnt matter which ones they go with but i think they should go togther.  And also you dont NEED to do this, but you are missing forearms.  You can put them on if you want, if not you dont really need to.

please let me know if you see anything wrong with it.

bytheway, could you guys tell me what some good lats and shoulders exercises are? are the machines better or free weights? because the thing is that most of the machines work out more that 3 of your muscle....so what i'm thinking is wouldn't that kind of mes up my schedule of doing 2 muscles a day?
thx

One more thing, lats are always with back.  I would put it there, it makes it alot easier and just keep shoudlers by itself.  Lat pulldown and pull up(wide grip) are both good for nice big lats.

thx for the tip, when you said shoulders by itself, did you mean 'byitself' or something like this:

monday-back/lats
tuesday-chest/triceps
wednesday-biceps/shoulders
thursday-legs,abs
friday-back/lats
saturday-rest
sunday-rest

also, i just saw your signature, how long have you been working out?

here is what i would switch your schedule to, that is most likely to the one you just had.
Monday:Back(which included lats) and biceps.
tuesday:chest/triceps
Wednesday:shoulders
thursday:legs abs
friday:i dont think you need to do back 2 times a week, but you can.  It wont hurt, since your giving 3 days rest.  but dont do biceps on friday, only do them on monday.
satsun off.
3 years.starting at 14.

Hi again,
i just heard some awful things and was wonering if they were true..
i use myoplex......but this isn't necessirly about myoplex........
is it true that protein supplement shakes can harm your body in a way that later in life you won't be able have a baby/kid ? ....fact, myth?

Protein supplements-bullcrap

Protein supplements are the exat proteins you find in your foods and what your body syntheseis naturally from the amino acids, which are too present very slightly in protein supplements.

Theres nothing dangerous about them

your body has been using them proteins since you have been a little baby inside your mothers womb.

The supplements that would most likely do that are

Pro hormones
HGH(too much)
Steroids

Nitric oxide also has radical effects

and free radicals can cause infertility due to cancer or other things etc

But i wont put that here as thats my belief and not the belief of most people.

and free radicals

am i glad to hear that.......i know what Steroids and Hormones are.......but what are HGH, nitric oxide and radicals?...are those like extra things people use to buff up?

HGH is human growth hormone which is produced by the pituitary gland which makes you grow taller, its what gives us our growth spurts, this HGH goes into bones *forgotten name* something and allows growth

If you take too much you can cause major hormone/chemical imbalances etc

HGH can also make you build muscle etc too
Nitric oxide is a supplement, that causes free radicals, a free radical is basically an electron

This will sound like a foreign language to you now as im assuming you dont take chemistry

But nitric oxide has oxidising properties, in doing so it makes free radicals when it makes certain bonds when the nitrix oxide reacts, and free electrons in the body will bond with ions in the body which is NOT good, and causes cancer, hence why ANTI oxidants (which stop oxidising hence ANTI oxidant lol) help prevent cancer.

Just stick with your normal protein supplements and you'll be fine

I have heard taking amino acids a lot can screw your stomach up apparently, but i dont know if thats true, and you dont take amino complex pills so dont worry

understood everything except for the ions boding with the electrons to make a neutron ........athough i took chemistry last year

RE: Need help please - Tuesday, August 23, 2005 8:40 AM
lol doesnt make a neutron,

oxidation and reduction equations

Oxidation-losing electrons
reduction-gaining electrons (yes...silly to call the gain of electrons REDUCTION i know, but it is that)

By gain and loss i dont mean electrons randomly appear and dissapear, its where they are dissociated through the bonds and either leave as a free radical, or an ion bonds with an element making it polar via its electron density yada yada.

As nitric oxide makes oxidation reactions, the bonds lead to the loss of electrons

(negative charge)

Our bodies use potassium and i think sodium ions in our nervous system to allow potential differences to give us movement etc, thats how it works on a simple basis, if an electron bonds with one of these ions (one thats positive, i think thats the potassium ion as its a group 1 element meaning its easier to just lose an electron giving it a + charge) itl lead to screwed up nerves, it can also screw up cells and just make damage in general.

From what i know to make neutrons you need radioactive materials to "decay" as it were.

Basically free radicals=bad

LOL

No,We don't exactly major here in england til we're 18+ (mainschool(4-16), college(16-18), university(18-21)<<USUAL AGES, thats how it goes here, in america colleges and universities are kinda the same thing from what i know

Im 18 but still doing A levels because i was an idiot and didnt try so lagged behind a year or two

Right now im taking A level Physics, Chemistry and Biology

I have natural talent in Chemistry

I have good talent when i work hard in biology

Physics...
well lets just say this forum doesnt allow swearing so i cant say how good i am at physics here

LOL

(Maybe if i got some decent teachers who actually speak ENGLISH id get better physics grades )

P.S. university and college are pretty much the same thing...although college is more for people who f***ed up in high school........they go to a community college, get a 3.0 avergar and then transfer to a good university.(what i'm doing right now, but it's different for me cause i'm still in high school and i just do it to get ahead._
