Supplement Ban 2006
-
Monday, August 01, 2005 12:50 PM
Alright, I'm not sure if any of yall have heard about this yet, but here goes. I just got a magazine in the mail from BSN and here is what it says... The government is fighting to have the Dietary Supplement Safety Act and the Dietary Supplement Access and Awareness Act passed. This would essentially allow the FDA to regulate your sports and fitness (and other) supplements as DRUGS. Even protein powder They are planning to enact this as soon as January 2006. If any one of yall feel the same way I do about this vist www.sfsassociation.com and click on "Contact Your Representative."

I've got no issues with this. They're not going to ban protein powder and that's all I'm concerned with. Though I can see how outratgeous this seem for someone that uses a ton of supplements.

Regulating supplements doesn't concern me. As long as they don't go over the top with this thing, then it's not a big deal.

If all else fails move here to Canada where they don't try to validate their power with stupid regulations.

Well, as far as I know the regulations are tougher here in Canada. Spoke to the company that supplies "Animal" products to Canada and he said they are all under review by the Government due to the ingredients.

As long as they don't ban whey powder (which would be absurd, its little more than powdered milk with more protein, less everything else)...
Squat 385, Bench 235, Deadlift 450 @ 181.

Who cares. Most of the supplements don't do anything anyway. All that matters is protein powder. You need stimulantes to work out...then fix your nutrition and drink a cup of coffee.

It bothers me. Mostly due to pro baseball. Palmeiro was suspended for "steriods", even though it could have just been another banned substance that isnt a steroid. But due to the wording of the testing program they could make any supplement a "steroid." I dont like that congress is changing the definition of the word. It starts at the highest level then makes its way down to you and me. Anything that helps build muscle could be considered a steriod to congress.

The thing that bothers me is the fact that a few ill informed politicians get to decide what we can and can't put into our bodies. They claim that the supplements people use are doing more harm instead of good, while the truth of the matter is, most people using supplements correctly in their daily lives are much happier, healthier people. I think someone really needs to open these politicians eyes to the difference between "supplements" and "anabolic steroids."

You need stimulantes to work out...then fix your nutrition and drink a cup of coffee. It's not the same thing as stuff like NO-Xplode or V12. Caffeine doesn't have any volumizing effects like l-arginine, and it can't increase your work load like creatine can.

Natural bodybuilding is something I'd love to see. I'd love the day that I could find a huge guy at the gym without asking myself how loaded he is with man made drugs. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing a board game in which everyone except me is cheating.

Even though they aren't on roids, but taking their Explode this and Creatine that, is what I consider cheating still. Funny, I don't take any of that crap and I have NOOO problem packing on mass. I think it's funny to hear the junk people on this board are taking and when you read their stats and see their picture, you can tell that all the junk they are on isn't making any difference what so ever.

Agreed. Most of it is just a placebo effect. I doubt I'll try anything more than protein powder ever again.

I think I am going to have to disagree with you Nitro, I think the problem most of these people have is with their diets and the fact that they don't train hard. I myself have seen great results with creatine, and I don't think the placebo effect would cause me to gain as much weight as I have on creatine. You, on the other hand do look great without taking any supplements, but I myself feel that you probably train much harder and are much more committed to bodybuilding than most. People think that they can just pop a few pills, not train any harder, and not fix their diets. This brings me back to the start of this thread. It is people such as these, who misuse these supplements, that are causing all of this. I mean, I myself have heard of a kid dying from a creatine "overdose." The kicker, however, is that kid was 15 years old, took enough for 5 people for a week, and didn't drink any water. Essentially his kidneys shut down. These politicians feed on information such as this, and it just makes passing these Acts that much easier. The only act they should be passing is the Dumbass Act.

Well from what I see in that article. It's probably not going to hinder our ability to obtain protein powder. But I do see that it would put tighter constraints on sup companies to provide more testing and data to prove the supplement does not harm individuals. The only thing it talks about banning is DHEA. I do see some what of a possitive to this. I might make it harder for sup companies to market their BS supplements. It seems now a days these companies can just come up with some crazy mix of stuff and sell it without any proof that it provides any good or bad to the consumer. On the down side though, it's going to raise the price of everything since the sup companies have to spend more on resources to provide the testing and data.

That sucks. 100$ lasts me like 4+ months but I'm still not excited for a raise in prices.

Previous: BSN NO Xplode $40 BSN Cellmass $40 Optimum PM Protein $30 Optimum Whey $20 Multivitamin $10 Here's what I cut it to: Universal Storm $20 Probolic SR $30 Optimum Whey $20 Multivitamin $10 The supplements from my previous budget worked great, but I can do without spending the extra 60 dollars a month. The whey protein and the multivitamin are necessities, but I choose to spend the extra 50 dollars on the electives.

Pretty much. It doesn't hurt my pockets that bad. My Dad sends me the money to pay for all of my stuff like supplements, clothes, and whatever else I need. When the money isn't coming out of your pockets, you don't think about it as much. I had no idea I was spending that much money on supplements until I sat down and did the math. Now I can spend that other 60 bucks on stuff like PSP games.

I know all of you guys are going to think this is ridiculous, but here is my point of view. I believe myself that the "ban" on supplements is due to the lack of control the government has on supplement companies. I believe that the supplement companies are becoming too wealthy and therefore too powerful. The government, not being able to tax and control supplements as they please, will just not do for them. The government, I believe is becoming somewhat intimidated by these growing companies, and wants to dissolve this problem immediately. All of this concern about the consumer is a cover for the real motive behind this ban. Consider this: The government creates laws that require the FDA and other drug companies to require prescriptions for certain supplements. Do none of you think that these same politicians proposing these "bans" would not get a piece of this new action? I mean, the FDA is one of the most powerful entities in the entire world. However, that is just what i think, you all can think what you want.

I couldnt care less if they ban it all, I'll still know where to find and get my protein, its never gonna stop me. I dont take anything other then protein either so I guess I would actually be happy if we were all on the same level, and there was no cheating.
