Split for tae kwon do
-
Friday, July 15, 2005 10:26 PM
Im all into martial arts and the whole fighhting deal. I've done boxing and Tae Kwon Do a long time now but I am still having trouble doing a perfect split to help with my kicks and the fact I am working out my legs and making them bigger isnt helping. Having muscle and doing a split is possible though. Anyone here have any advice on stretching that can speed up the process?

i recently found out about this small piece of equipment you strap to your legs and crank them apart (not like the one in the movie where they are getting there leg muscle ripped to do a split) but it will help a good deal.

well even using the machine your gonna be ripping muscle to do the split.. and i would advise you to crank little by little and get used to it dont go destroying your inside thigh muscles too swiftly
Theres always someone worse off than yourself!!

do alot of streching with your legs... eventually it will get better.

to get better at stretching takes time. your not going to be able to one day simply do the splits. it takes lots of time spent stretching to become more flexible. i advise stretching AFTER you workout. you will be able to stretch faurther because your muscles will be nice and loose, plus this personally has made me more flexible

I bought a book a long time ago about stretching- Stretching scientifically, I think it was called- Anyway, they recommend stretching first thing in the morning, it's set up sort of like a workout with sets and everything. Here's some of what I remember- Start out with side splits- But don't go as far down as you can at first. First "set", have your feet placed in a nice wide stance, knees locked in place. Squeeze your legs together as though you're trying to pinch the floor with your feet- Hold for about fifteen seconds, then move your legs further apart and repeat- Doing about six "sets" like this, finishing up with the widest split you can get for the same amount of time, while trying to pinch the floor should help- This is to be done first thing in the morning, every morning, and again later in the day. there were other methods and stretches in the book, I'll have to see if I can find it again.
