Dexter Jackson DVD Review

Ok, one word to describe my feelings upon getting this DVD as a gift last Valentines Day… AWESOME!!!  One of the best three bodybuilders in the world, and possibly a future Mr. Olympia containing full body workouts.   What actually makes this DVD that much greater is that Dexter uses textbook form on all his movements… that’s right, no heaving and jerking around like a wack-job.  Just high intensity focus on the muscle being worked.  Lets get into the standout performances for each major body part in a training session.

Chest
This footage of him training Chest alone could possibly save a lot of young shoulders and injuries in general to the masses… they should play it on a continuous loop in gyms around the world every Monday around 5:00 (As this seems to be the majority time for people to train Chest).  I say that because he begins with the most abused movement of all… Flat Barbell Bench Presses.  What makes him different than every young kid with a wife beater on Monday afternoons is that each and every one of his reps are maintained with total control and a fairly slow negative.  No bouncing, one-side higher than the other reps that we are all used to seeing.  Awesome control…. He does four or so sets and eventually gets up to 405 with a good 6 reps, but with some forced reps from his partner to achieve that.  What a minute, if he is doing 405 for reps with strict form…maybe he could be doing 500 with loose form.  Yea, and maybe his career would be cut short due to training his ego and not the muscles.  After the 405 he does a additional set of 365 for another 6 reps using forced reps again.  So, that’s officially two work sets for Flat Barbell Bench Presses.  He wraps up with DB Incline Presses and some Cable Crossovers to finish up, with more of the same great form.  I suspect the cable work was because of a contest a couple of weeks down the road, instead of DB Flies.

Back
Again beginning with another mass builder, Deadlifts.  Dexter employs a over and under grip and uses wrist wraps for all sets.  Doesn’t go that heavy with these, but as mentioned earlier, he is training for a contest.  The form is spot on, definitely utilizing the peak contraction at the top of the movement with the chest out and shoulders back to get that good squeeze at the top.  The first rep looks like the last rep, something you don’t see much with people doing Deadlifts… usually the lifter will fade around the last three or so and it is noticeable with their form.  None of that here.  Also included is some T-bar Rows, Pulldowns and some Low Hammer Rows.  Something that people may notice about Dexter doing Pulldowns is that he doesn’t bring the bar down to his upper chest like most of us Full Range of Motion Nazis.  He brings the bar about Chin level for each and every rep.  I do remember reading a article by Dorian Yates about how he believes there is no significant Back contraction when bringing the bar below your Chin.  Just another option to consider if you are having problems getting that contraction in your back doing pulldown type movements.

Shoulders
Nothing to shocking here.  Seated DB Presses, standing DB Lateral raises and the Rear-Delt Machine.  The only thing that may surprise some people is a little body English to get the weights moving for standing DB lateral raises.  Something that I am realizing is a necessity when using heavy weights.  It’s a far cry from being sloppy though, every rep is in total control and you can see his shoulder bugging out.  There are definitely two schools of thought with these, the stricter style and the more power style to get the DB’s in motion.  I guess we all have to find which one works best for us.  Those three movements comprised his whole shoulder routine, there was no direct trap work performed on the video.  I think I read somewhere that he doesn’t require direct trap work, because they grow to easy.  This alone, is another reason why he’s probably one of the best in the world… recognizing that balance means everything.

Legs
Man, I wanted to see him Squat... but unfortunately he used mainly machines.  Really, really good form on all movements getting forced reps on the last set for a lot.  You could also tell he was getting a good squeeze at the top of each movement as well.  Just wondering were these guys buy their pants.

Arms
No slouch when it comes to the guns department.  Biceps and Triceps are trained together using mainly machines.  It’s to bad sometimes when you watch these training videos, because on one hand you want to see the great condition, but on another you want to see the movements that built the body.  I know from reading his monthly article in MD that Dexter built his Biceps mainly on Barbell Curls, Preacher Curls and various DB Curls.  In some way or another he used a machine for that type of movement for this video.  Triceps were done in a triset style with three movements done back to back and that was it for arms.  Again with the great form on all movements performed.

I hope this provided a brief explanation of this video and what it was about.  I would definitely recommend picking it up to get some tips and a different outlook on things.  I didn’t mention everything, but those were the things that stood out to me.  There isn’t really much of commentary, but that’s fine with me as I don’t care what their favorite color is or what there house looks like… I just want to see them train.
