. Our coach put it simply; "For those who weight lift, a 15 mile run is basically squatting, benching, and rowing serious weight all at th same time.
Decline press is actually, from what research I have found, is the most effective chest muscle building exercise. I will post a list of exercises and their effectivness. I got this from a university study off bodybuilding.com this past summer:

what? lol.   Sounds like a typical high school coach who has no idea what they are talking about.    I run long distances sometimes and it kills me but it definitely isnt the same as lifting "serious" weight.

About your research you found...how about a link to it? who at the university conducted it? students maybe?  .   And honestly that research posted is confusing and dumb from what i see.  For  smaller muscles all it shows it the force of isos (except close grip on tris) .  So that research means that isos work the muscles more than compounds?  I certainly hope that isnt what they are saying.

There were so many things I wanted to dispute about the OP, but after scrolling down I see that nmoney has hit every single one.  I agree with nmoney 100% on everything

Fair enough.

I actually called my original trainer who taught me most of what I know, and asked the question about stretching prior to lifting and the answer is exactly what most of you have projected. He then did reccomend stretching afterward to loosen up lactic acid as well as ramping the flow of oxygenated blood. In closing, you guys take it there so make changes as you would.

For the 15 miler thing, our coach isn't the smartest person in the world when it comes to weight lifting etc, what I believe he meant was that the physical toll taken is almost the same. I remember squatting deep 275 for X5 and needing to die the next day. I also recall running 13 miles moderate paced(7:00) and also wanted to die the next day. Of course, I will agree that some of his hypothesis is flawed due to the fact that weight lifting and running are two different things, effect the body differently, but both are physically taxing on the body.

As for the study, I have to get back to you on that. I remember copying it into my Word documents, I'll look for it when I get time later.

Ha, I'll work on the link.

To disregard the post, is basically disregarding all of the information I have ever learned in my experiences. Essentially; dire mistake.

I was joking about the OP. well, in a way. I just said that because some of the things you stated were flawed, but it was meant more as a joke then anything.

we all keep learning as we grow and train, dont forget the basics though. They are the foundation from which it is all built.

Cardiovascular training and resistance training are inferior to weight training.

Isnt resistance training the same as weight trainng?

Your body needs cardio training too. To deny that is rediculous.

It doesnt. And it all depends on your goals/needs.

You get quite a cardiovascular workout just from lifting weights. You condition your body for that.

Now if being in better shape means to run a 4.4 40 yd dash, or run a mile in under 5 minutes, etc. etc... then your cardio needs/goals will change.

but you certainly dont need it. Look at the majority of the population, they do no cardio accept walking around.

I actually didn't believe it myself the first or second time I read it. However, when I put it to the test with heavy dumbbells and slow sets of 10-12, then straight to heavy and slow flat DB sets, to dips, i got serious growth as well as strength. Take it for what it is, it worked for me, so yeah i believe it.

Oh, and for the peanut gallery, resistance training is weight training for those who could/are confused.

I think our bodies need some sort of cardio for health and stamina. There is something different about running for 30 min then lifting weights.
