brihead301 [<font]The point is that in order to look "good" like all "big and muscly" you have to gain the muscle first. You gotta eat a lot and lift heavy to do that, and you will most likely lose your six pack. Then you can cut the fat off if you want to get all cut looking. Me, I just care about the first part. And it's not like you're even gonna look bad either even if you're not all ripped looking. If you're working out hard and eating right, you will look great. I look damn good, and I don't have a 6-pack. I never did. Thats crap right there. i refuse to lose my six-pack...completely lol. I'm doing bill starr's 5 x 5 right now and the six-pack will stay intact for the duration.

Acujeremy Well he is 51 now, so its understandable to have a bit of a gut. But was he ever ripped? I just don't understand the point of Squatting 600 lbs, if you are not going to be healthy looking. A pot belly, is not a sign of health. Was he ever in good shape? You don't have to be ripped to be healthy. Fat people can have arteries that are 10x clearer than yours. Weight means nothing, unless you are MORBIDLY obese. Ripp isn't even obese.

What???? That is not true. Being fat is not healthy. So is it safe to say, that if one follows Rippetoe's routine to the T, you will end up looking like him?

Ok look guys. Thats not what I meant at all. I love Rippetoe. I love Starting Strength. But I would think, the greatest coach in the world, would look a little more shredded like than he does. Maybe like a Tom Venuto look. So if one were to follow Tom Venutos plan, wouldn't one be one the road to looking like him? Doesn't a teacher emulate the goal? But maybe Rippetoe was more shredded when he was younger. I haven't seen old pics.

The book is called starting strength. It is about getting strong. Mark Rippetoe is extremely strong.

Why can't one get extremely strong and looking great at the same time?

Strength is definitely a big part of it. I'm just trying to figure this all out. I just would have thought someone of his status would have mastered the art of a perfect physique.

Acujeremy Why can't one get extremely strong and looking great at the same time? They can. You can. It's not hard. They're using the whole strength thing as an excuse to be a lard...
