wouldnt a  split rotine be better than the mark rippetoe routine? then you could do more exercises for every muscle? Like in the chest you could do flies, incline bench and dumbell press? When in the  starting strength routine all you get is the bench press? And for shoulders all you get is the military press but if you do a split you could do lateral raises, arnold presses and dumbell shoulder presses?

What is your true goal here?  Do you want to get big and strong, or do you want to stand in front of the mirror for an hour and a half and get a "great pump"?

More exercises for each muscle?  Do the damn routine AS IS, do it right, use strict form, lift heavy, add weight regularly and put down the latest copy of Muscle and Fitness, you don't need a bunch of fricken excerises for each muscle right now.

All you get is the bench press?  You are a novice lifter, all you need is the bench press.

It sounds to me like you need to decide right now if you are looking for a great pump, or if you really want to get bigger and stronger.

one more question though. how come the routine only has you doing the dead lift once a week but squats 3 times a week?

and why is it only one set of 5?

because heavy deadlifts are very taxing and squats are the base of the routine. squats will strengthen your lower back as well as your entire lower body.

Lose this way of thinking and you are set.

I am going to try the rippetoe routine today.

Stick with it at least a minimum of 6 weeks before deciding if it's working or not.  Finishing the workout without a pump will probably give you a false sense of whether or not it gave you a good workout.  Forget about the pump, focus on good form.  That's what is important.

no, you are alternating cleans/rows and deadlifts essentially. you are squatting every workout.

notice squats are in both a and b, they are not alternated.

Actually you squat three times a week every week, and deadlift either once or twice depending on the week.

GARR you editted it before we got to correct you

Actually following that routine your squats:deads ratio will be 3:2 one week, and 3:1 the next.

Just pointin that out...

*EDIT*

ROFL! I like how there are all these people watching this thread and as soon as something wrong was said we all jump in. Teamwork, eh?

yea true but i dont see why you only do 1 set of 5 since deads are one of the most important/best exercises...oh well if it works it works

That's debateable (sp?). I would possibly say squats are the best mass builder, but both are very important. When your deadlifts starting getting up there in weight, they can be very taxing on your CNS, like edrice said earlier. Also, that's just the way this routine is set up...and it has had obvious successs, I'm sure there are other routines with deadlifts as the core excersise, but this one definately uses squats.

becuase squats are more important to the routine, and after you squat heavy, deadlifting heavy is not fun. its all that is needed to see progress is what rippetoe says in the book basically. just give it a try.

edit:
i would agree with good riddance that squats are the better of the two, if you built the routine more on deadlifts and squatted less you would be neglecting a fair amount of leg work, even though deads also work legs.

Hmm, if I'm going to go ahead and do this...should I go ahead and buy the book? Or just follow the routine? :(
