If you're cutting, go to the gym right after you wake up and do some cardio activities. Don't consume anything first, so your body will be in the state whereby the glucose is low.

This will allow the cardio activity directly use up the fat as a source of energy, instead of the glucose stored in your body/muscle.

However, if you think you can't maximize your cardio because you don't have the energy to do so, eat VERY small amount before doing any cardio activity.

if you're cutting, it's best to go right when you wake up.  i don't really think you necissarily have to go on an empty stomach, i have a protein bar before i go.

it's ideal to go again after work to lift, but if you can't make 2 trips, you can just lift after you do some cardio.......or do cardio after you lift

Cardio on empty stomach makes so little difference it's not worth the effort.

Would you elaborate a bit more? I didn't know this before, but that's what I have always been told before, and it makes a lot of sense IMO.

It would be interesting to know why you think so.

how would it be ideal to go again after work?

truebeginner it really doesnt make that much of a difference either way. i prefer morning cardio but it would be better to have some protein before it anyway, either way it wont make a huge difference

i certainly dont have time to go twice a day lol, plus i dont want to over work myself either.

but if theres debate over weather or not it is benificial to workout in the morning or not and none over any other time of the day, then surely it would be an educated guess to try working out in the morning anyway, and see if it works. and if it doesnt then it would still be the same as working out in the afternoon wouldnt it?

i dont see any harm in it, unless someone has another opinion?

1)  Does your use of the term "workout" include weights?  If so, do not train on an empty stomach when hitting the weights.  If you just meant cardio only, you can do it upon waking up on an empty stomach or not.  Some people can, some can't.  As Coldfire said, the debate rages on but the differences in true fat loss can be very minimal.  For me?  I've got an exercise bike at home.  I don't mind it at all.  But if I had to drive to the gym, I'd eat first.

Really the best time to train is whenever you have the energy to do so.  If you are not a morning person and you never want to be but after 8-9 hours of work, you're ready to go and spry.. then train at that time.

Whatever you can fit into your busy schedule where you feel you've got the most energy and a some time to devote to training.  It can in the morning, after work or later if you so choose.

I'm just curious to know if you meant hitting the weights when working out as I feel you probably did.. and in that case, I'd advise against training with weights and/or cardio if your workouts will include the iron.

If it's just cardio, you can go either or.

if you do cardio in the morning, you're losing your energy.  lifting weights without energy is ridiculous and stupid; pointless.  if you spend 8-10 hours at work and get alittle more energy, then you can go back and hit the weights with all you have.

why do you always ask questions like you know everything?  "how would it be ideal to go again after work?"

look it up next time instead of trying to get me to say something so you can "pwn" me or whatever it is you call it

yea because the advice your offering doesnt make as much sense. Why would someone run in the morning, then workout? sure if thats all they can do its not a big deal but it would make much more sense to workout first when they have the most energy..then they can do cardio either right after working out or if they dont have time they can do it after work. someone shouldnt need to "look it up" to understand that they'll have more energy for the workout if they do it first

if you're trying to lose weight, cardio should be #1 on the agenda at all times.  sure, you can lift and workout before you do cardio, but if you're trying to lose weight, cardio should be first on your list

no..it shouldnt

getting stronger, lifting hard, and working out should be the main training priority. diet is also of course extremely important. then cardio should be done. tons of bodybuilders get cut without cardio...none do it without lifting.

I think this whole discussion came from the idea that if you wake up...on an empty stomach...no carbs in your system and do cardio...your body will be forced to utilize fat as an energy source, thus burning fat. Not sure how true it is...but i've heard it before.

is this a joke?

where did i say NOT to lift?  i said to lift

and we're not talking about steroid meatheads here, we're talking about an average person who wants to cut and lose weight.  Cardio.......

The best time to  do cardio is first thing in the morning, that's a plain and simple fact. anyways, if you lift, then hop on a treadmill for 40 minutes, your body is in the worst catabolic state it can be in, you're losing what you could be gaining.

if you do cardio, then lift, you can have a protein shake after you lift, and maximize your gain potential

Its actually been studied that when you workout earlier in the day you have better levels of Test to cortisol which is good. When you workout late in the day close to bedtime your body cant rest as well cause its still trying to fight off all the cortisol and later in the day your body takes longer to get rid of cortisol.

This topic is very controversial...
And what you stated as fact isn't fact... it works for some people and doesn't for others.

It all depends on the person if cardio upon waking on empty stomache is best or cardio post workout is best.
And doing cardio post workout isn't catabolic....

i'm not talking about steroid users i'm talking about natural bodybuilders and lifters in general. cardio is added to create a calorie deficit and possibly raise EPOC. as far as fat loss is concerned thats it.

the main concern is still working out. that fact that you actually suggesting to do cardio and then lift is ridiculous. you would be much weaker if you did any significant amount of cardio. cardio is done, as i said, to add to the fat loss..it is not the most important aspect.

it is not a plain and simple fact that cardio is best done in the morning. sure it's helpful and usually convenient but its not "best done when you first get up in the morning on an empty stomach, etc..". you say these things without even understanding the reasoning behind it

and doing cardio after lifing doesnt put you in the "worst catabolic state"...you just have to not be dumb about the intensity and duration of it

if you do cardio for say, 40 minutes, after you do chest and arms.........your body is in the worst possible catabolic state.  hopping on a treadmill and walking for 40 minutes, and not putting any protein or carbs in your stomach for your muscles to feed upon is only AIDING the catabolism.

if you do cardio, then go back and lift, you can get your proper protein and carbs to fuel and feed your muscles for maximal recovery

in response to the first bolded part: THAT'S WHY i said to come back later, so that you can be re-energized.  it's ideal to lift weights when you're full of energy.

you're right, cardio AIDS in fat loss.  but it should be priority #1 when trying to lose fat.  sure, you don't have to do cardio, but say you have two people with the same metabolism and weight, bf, etc etc.  they both subtract 300 calories from their diet.  one of these men do cardio, and the other doesn't.  Which one will be more successful in trying to cut?

perhaps i was harsh earlier.  i was on my lunch break at work, and was not having the best day.  but this is the last thing i'm saying about this post, and it's in response to, "and doing cardio after lifing doesnt put you in the "worst catabolic state"...you just have to not be dumb about the intensity and duration of it"........

If you read anything from this post, let it be this:  Following an enthusiastic exercise routine, energy stores are depleted (ATP and creatine phosphate).  Muscle glycogen stores are drained and catabolic hormones like cortisol, epinphrine, and norepinephrine are raised.  These are all catabolic hormones that break down muscle!!!!!  Having a protein shake and some carbs right after a workout are ideal because they provide the muscles with nutrients needed to enhance natural processes for tissue growth.  My point is, after you lift weights, your body is exposed to all the muscle "eating" hormones.  walking on a treadmill for 40 minutes without putting anything into your stomach only hurts you more.

You can't have a protein shake before cardio either; your body will not utilize that towards tissue repair.  (you probably know that though, seriously)

obviously the one who does cardio but that doesnt prove your point at all. you could use the same circumstance and say "one eats a piece of cake and one does" so not eating cake is the most important aspect to getting cut.
if you have those same 2 people and one workouts and one just runs they're both going to lose fat but the one who works out will keep more muscle and thus burn more energy, losing more fat while being able to keep calories higher.

yes im aware that your body produces those hormones. your body isnt completely depleted of ATP or CP stores, they're constantly being regenerated.
and yes you can have a protein shake before cardio. i am not talking about 40min. on a treadmill i'm talking about 15-20min. at a moderate pace. and again thats only under certain conditions.

(you probably know that though, seriously)

yes im aware that your body produces those hormones. your body isnt completely depleted of ATP or CP stores, they're constantly being regenerated.
and yes you can have a protein shake before cardio. i am not talking about 40min. on a treadmill i'm talking about 15-20min. at a moderate pace. and again thats only under certain conditions.

i don't see what you're trying to say with your last post other than agreeing with me.

but if you can only make 1 trip a day to the gym then it would probably be best to lift then do cardio. but it will hurt you.

in the end, it's better to make 2 trips so you can spend more energy and focus more on each aspect; cardio and weights

thats not my main argument. personally i dont even do cardio after weight training..i'm just saying it's not this horrible thing if you keep the time limited.

my argument was that weight training is much more important than cardio even when cutting and im really surprised someone on this site would even argue that

thats not an argument, its a statement saying my surprise that anyone one this site could possibly believe cardio is more important than weight training. it's ridiculous....ask anyone else who knows what they'll talking about and they'll tell you weight training is more important during cutting or bulking.

ACTUALLY READ WHAT I SAY. WANT ME TO COPY AND PASTE IT FOR YOU?

"but if you can only make 1 trip a day to the gym then it would probably be best to lift then do cardio."

but making two trips is best, that's my initial argument.

you stated more than once that you thought cardio should be done before working out and that cardio is more important than weight training

want me to copy and paste it for you?

"but if you can't make 2 trips, you can just lift after you do some cardio"
"if you're trying to lose weight, cardio should be #1 on the agenda at all times."
"if you're trying to lose weight, cardio should be first on your list"
"we're talking about an average person who wants to cut and lose weight.  Cardio......."
