Nutrition labels and good fats?
-
Sunday, July 06, 2008 5:42 PM
Hi everyone (first post by the way ) I'm getting ready to start my first run at Optimum Anabolics and there are just some questions I can't seem to answer myself. I need to have +/- 130 grams of fat combined in my 5 meals besides the after-workout shake. So that's just about 26 grams /meal if I break them up evenly. The biggest question I have is how to tell if fats are good fats. A list in the program shows the breakdown between fats and the oils / sources, but i'm still unsure. For example, a peanut butter label I pulled from the internet: Total fat 16 g Saturated fat 3 g So 3 of the 16 is saturated fat, but where does that leave the remainder?

the remainder is unsaturated fat, mono or poly unsaturated ('good fats'), or trans fat (the worst fats) but now they have to include trans in the breakdown, although if its under .5g they can report none, so check ingredients for partially hydrogenated oils, then there is trans fat but .5g or under per serving...avoid trans fat a lot of labels tell uhow much of mono and poly unsaturated fats there are as well, if not then itll just be the total fat-saturated-trans = unsaturated

That clears things up alot. Now one more thing, and I hope this makes some sort of sense haha. If I was say eating a bowl of pasta with tuna, that met the carbs and protein requirement for my meal, would the necessary servings of an oil like canola to contain 26g of fat satisfy the fat requirements if I just mixed that in?

yeah as long as u matched the serving size to ur requirement.. but i would go for olive oil instead of canola.. but to answer your question, yes

if it says trans fat......0grams that means there is still trans fat in the product but less then .5grams per serving, they can;t exclude the trans fat figure.

Registered nurse material actually haha, no burgers and fries for me. One more fat question: Should I try and balance different kinds of fats? Or if possible should I shoot for as many polyunsaturated as I can?
