gaining mass on a maintenance diet - Thursday, July 03, 2008 8:36 PM
I dont wanna bulk lol. Ive lost alot of motivation to bulk in tha future.  I get showered with compliments like everyday about how good i look and really i just dont feel like losing my leanness ever.  Is it possible to gain muscle mass on a maintenance diet?  Even if it was very slow and gradual that would be completely cool with me.  I think i could, because i bulked up and didnt gain any fat, and you hear about people gaining weight but losing fat all tha time.

it's possible.  but it would probably be a long, gradual process.  You certainly wouldn't get as big as you want to get, but if you're happy now, then that's all that matters.

the only way i guess you could do it on a maintenance diet is by calculating precise amounts of protein and carbs you'd need after your workout to feed your muscles so they could grow.  Breakfast would probably be even more important too.

basically, your diet has to be really clean

haha then you have the discipline that a ton of people wish they could have.

yeah, then you can definatly get bigger.  i guess i'd say post workout meal is probably most important though.  just calculate how many g's of protein and carbs you need.  if you eat too much of either of they two, it'll go to waist. (yes, waist; not waste)

I just add some calories every day and If I notice I'm putting fat on anywhere I'll keep my diet where it's at til I gain some more(lean mass). Then I'll add some more calories. You just can't guess at your calories the way you could If you were to bulk. This is what I do during the summer, but during winter I bulk but I won't let my bf go past 10%.
If it wasn't painfully difficult then you didn't do it right

you act like bulking up and the little fat that comes with it is a forever permanent thing..

Bulk up, a little more cleanly than others im sure...but enough calories over to make a good impact. Get as big as you want to get and then cut. You seem to be pretty comfortable with cutting, and committed to your diet so if your body fat raises a little bit, it should be no big deal for you.

im not the slightest bit worried about fat gain.  Its the bloat up from the carbs that i cant stand.  As long as its summer i dont wanna be eating that many carbs.

my waist can seriously go from its currnet 31" to 35.5" in 3 days.

You seem so carb sensitive, is that why you were wanting to bulk with keto? have you tried looking at that anabolic mass diet or whatever its called? 5 days high prot. high fat, low carb. 2 days high carb low prot/fat.

Dont know much about it myself, but figured maybe its worth looking into.

i have a real hard time making a decision about this type of thing.  If youve read my journal tha whole way through or anything, you can see ill decide im going to cut and then quit a week later and stuff like that.

My last bulk was fairly clean but not to much. I clean bulk 100% of the time now and getting bigger faster than ever. a 6oz chicken breast has 40g of protien and only like 5g of fat. I drink lots of fat free milk and eat a ton of egg whites. I'll throw in a yolk for the amino acids but that's it. I refuse to ever dirty bulk again. Its such a waste of time and I hate doing cardio enough as it is.

yeah, those are all clean foods, but if your bulking why not just eat the whole egg, etc.

i dont think i will ever in my life eat just egg whites, that is disgusting.

i'm glad this post came up,i was gonna throw this in very soon myself!i have been trying to gain on maintanance for almost a year, initially i lost weight because i was too heavy, then once i had a waistline and a bit of visual ab muscle i started lifting "proper",obviously like us all i got right into it and the need to get bigger became most important.....but i just spent a year getting slimmer....bulking!!!!i had a dilemna but i have stuck it out on maintanance, good diet and after nearly 12 months a good amount of size has been added,22 pounds of muscle, and my midsection intact!!!ha ha!so a slow process,it tests the patience quite often but it's a long term thing is it not?incidentally i was 70 pounds too heavy 2 years ago,and my waist is now 6 inches smaller......thats why the bulk scared me....fat loves me ha ha.rolling....if you wanna swap abs anytime.........
if you're not continually learning then you're listening to the wrong people!!

My family has high cholesteral so I cant afford to be downing a ton of yolks. The yolk is my favorite part no matter how the egg is cooked.
