Cpl's TP-PT journal - Monday, April 05, 2004 2:10 PM
So, I'm one of the few here who was lucky enough to be tapped as a tester for the TP-PT routine- And today was my first workout.
Part of the deal was that I have to keep a journal here, so here it is- Although anyone reading this should also be aware of another part of the deal- I am not allowed to discuss the program, I can only detail the workout I completed on any given day.

Today's workout was definitely a wake up call for me- I haven't worked so many muscles in one day in a long time, and my body wasn't totally ready for it. Here's what I did-
Lat pulldowns
Bent over rows, underhand grip
Lying leg curls
Machine hammer curls
Barbell curls
Barbell shrugs
Calf raises

While I only did two sets of each exercise (After a warmup) it still felt like a real challenge to me, since I've been used to working only one muscle group per day.

Not hurting- Just shocked, I guess you could say.
I'm used to only 9 working sets or less, all for the same muscle group- Going from that to fourteen sets for three muscle groups... Well, this program is definitely going to get me in a different kind of shape, that's for sure. Thanks again for the opportunity!

Similar to CB in that.. I went from Max-OT 6-9 sets to around 12. Was shocked as well.

I can imagine that it's gonna be very different.

I'll be following this journal as well as embarking on this myself. Looking good CPL.

Day 2-
Still a shock to the system, so many muscles in one day. Feels great, though-
Barbell Squats
Quad Extensions
Incline Barbell Press
Cable Crossovers
Military Dumbbell Press
Close-Grip Bench Press
V-bar Press-downs

I'm liking the idea of getting used to slightly higher reps and slightly lower weights- New feeling for me altogether. Today was still two sets each exercise.

Yesterday was a rest day- Today, on the other hand, was a repeat of Monday's workout.
Lat pulldowns
Bent over rows, underhand grip
Lying leg curls
Machine hammer curls
Barbell curls
Barbell shrugs
Calf raises

Again, two sets per exercise, in the six to nine rep range. On monday, I was shooting for six reps each set, since I'm new to this sort of workout. Today, I pushed and got seven or eight each set.

I was supposed to post this yesterday- Friday, that is.
Friday's workout was a repeat of Tuesday's workout, same exercises, same amount of sets. Again, the first time I did this workout I was doing six reps for each exercise, but this time around got a couple more in each set.
Barbell Squats
Quad Extensions
Incline Barbell Press
Cable Crossovers
Military Dumbbell Press
Close-Grip Bench Press
V-bar Press-downs

I'm already noticing that my body needs a little more rest than usual- I actually woke up a little late for work yesterday- Gotta remember to go to bed a little earlier from now on.
Saturday and Sunday are rest days, so I'll report back in on Monday.

Probably not.
I can't talk about the upcoming workouts, just the ones I've done so far. All I can say is, wait till you see what I'm posting for the next three weeks.

Nah, it hasn't gotten that bad so far... So far. I'm still getting used to working every muscle so much, and like I said earlier, you might want to get ready to get a little more sleep than usual. Overall, the workout feels great right now.

I'd still say it's easy- I've had no problem doing the workouts, I've just been noticing how my body's adjusting to working everything twice in one week. A little more sleep here and there, or perhaps that's just extended nightmares of things to come. I don't know.

Okay, I didn't post yesterday- Problems at work, I had to stay late. I still managed to get my workouts in though- Yesterday's and todays.
Same two workouts I've been doing, working the entire body in two days- Only yesterday and today, I did three sets for each exercise. I think my body's adjusted to the idea of working everything so much as opposed to once a week, both workouts felt really good.
Sorry for the short post, but I've been swamped with work the last few days and I've got a lot of catching up to do around the house... Tomorrow's a rest day anyway, and I'll give a more detailed post then.

Here's today's work-
Lat pulldowns
Bent over rows, underhand grip
Lying leg curls
Machine hammer curls
Barbell curls
Barbell shrugs
Calf raises

This time, four sets for each exercise. Felt real good, I tried supersetting some of the exercises to cut down on the length of the workout- I did sets for legs and biceps back to back, it kept my heart rate up real nice... Got me thinking I have to start doing some cardio soon. It's been too long. I think I'll skip it for the duration of this program, though. As a matter of fact, I think at the end of this program, I'll go into my first cutting phase.

And here's the last day of week 2.
Barbell Squats
Quad Extensions
Incline Barbell Press
Cable Crossovers
Military Dumbbell Press
Close-Grip Bench Press
V-bar Press-downs

Again, four sets for each exercise. I think I'm seeing a little bit of a difference- I really should start measuring my bf%, but just from looking in the mirror I've been noticing my abs showing through a little more- Which is cool, since I haven't even worked my abs directly in the past couple of weeks. Like I said in the last post, I think it's probably because my heart rate is staying up longer than normal. Really makes me think I'll respond well to some actual cardio...

Lat pulldowns
Bent over rows, underhand grip
Lying leg curls
Machine hammer curls
Barbell curls
Barbell shrugs
Calf raises

Once again, this was Monday's workout. However, I'm now in week three- Today I had to do five sets for each exercise. Things are starting to get hairy now, I supersetted everything- Only two groups at a time, of course- To keep the total workout time down. I think my endurance is definitely picking up though, I started out at eight reps on the first set of each exercise, and never got below six- Which is good, since I'm only supposed to be lifting in the six to nine rep range anyway. The workout was obviously longer than before, which I have a feeling will take it's toll tomorrow- But we'll see.

Well, with warmups and rest time- Which there wasn't much of- I'd say around forty, forty five minutes. To be honest, I wasn't really keeping close track of time. I'll make sure to do that for Thursday's workout.

Sooo- Today's workout-
Barbell Squats
Quad Extensions
Incline Barbell Press
Cable Crossovers
Military Dumbbell Press
Close-Grip Bench Press
V-bar Press-downs

Five sets for each again today- Was again able to start out at eight reps for everything, and only once never made it to six- Third set of squats, my form felt a little off, there was a slight twitch in my lower back so I stopped. Nothing wrong at all, I just got the wrong footing from the start and when I tried to correct it at four reps, I felt my lower back jump a little on my right side- Whenever I feel anything like this, I tend to end the set just to be on the safe side. Of course, I don't end the entire workout, so after a couple of minutes of rest, I finished the rest of my squats off without incident.
Speaking of twitches and stuff, I felt a little sore today from yesterday's workout. I haven't felt sore in a long, long time now- Unless I'm doing an exercise that also gives a stretch, like dumbbell flies. Anyway, it felt good to be sore.

Lat pulldowns
Bent over rows, underhand grip
Lying leg curls
Machine hammer curls
Barbell curls
Barbell shrugs
Calf raises

This is what I had to do for today- Look familiar? Man, I thought I'd be getting sick of this routine, but it's definitely been keeping me on my toes- Or off my feet these last couple of days anyway. Yesterday was a rest day- I definitely needed it. Lots of soreness from the last two workouts, and then I had today's to deal with... Same routine, exercises listed above- But six sets for each. I'm at the point now when I HAVE to do the supersets to get the workout done... I've also noticed my body screaming at me for more food over the last couple of days. And more rest. I fell asleep playing Drakengard last night- Before I had the chance to save my game. Now I have to play this stupid level all over again. TP-PT is ruining my life!
Actually, I don't think I've ever had a serious workout that's taken so much out of me. It feels good, pushing my body like this- Well, it doesn't feel good, but there's a sense of accomplishment there somewhere.

I haven't started yet so I am watching your journal closely. You capture great information. Curious, are you focused on bulking?

Keep up the great work and good luck!!

Thanks- Here's Friday's entry, almost forgot to put one in.
Barbell Squats
Quad Extensions
Incline Barbell Press
Cable Crossovers
Military Dumbbell Press
Close-Grip Bench Press
V-bar Press-downs

Six sets for each of these too. Still sore, don't know from which workout anymore. To answer your question about bulking, yes, I'm still very much focused on bulking, and today's shopping list proves it. I just got back from the store with about six pounds of chicken and three pounds of steaks- Plus about five boxes of all natural brown rice and a nice big container of designer whey. On Friday, I went to get milk from the cafeteria to mix my shake with, and all they had was chocolate milk left. Just in case anyone's wondering, there is such thing as too much chocolate flavor.
But back to the bulking- I have put on a couple of pounds, but I've also noticed my bodyfat dropping- I don't have a set of calipers, but I can tell you I can see my abs more than ever- I'm sure you'll all notice the difference when the before and after pics are all done. Plus, I had a friend make some very encouraging comments about my size the other day- She was amazed at the difference in size since last time she'd seen me, just a month ago. I don't know if the size is actually there, or if this particular program's volume has me looking more pumped all the time... We'll see in the end, I guess.

So you are supersetting some of these exercises. What's the average lenght in the gym now that you are up to 6 sets per exercise?

I wouldn't know. I'm up to seven sets per exercise now
Here's yesterday's workout, seven sets each-
Lat pulldowns
Bent over rows, underhand grip
Lying leg curls
Machine hammer curls
Barbell curls
Barbell shrugs
Calf raises
Actually, my total time in the gym for yesterday was about an hour and twenty minutes. I think I've been cutting down the rest time between sets, even with the supersets- One of my coworkers seems to have walked off with our stopwatch. Bottom line- These high set workouts are killing me. Hats off to Twin Peak, you made me cry.
Here's today's workout, again- Seven sets per exercise.
Barbell Squats
Quad Extensions
Incline Barbell Press
Cable Crossovers
Military Dumbbell Press
Close-Grip Bench Press
V-bar Press-downs
I have to be completely and totally honest- After yesterday's workout, and still suffering the effects from last week- Hell, the last three weeks combined, I guess- Today was truly the first day in months that I really did not want to work out. In fact, I'm thinking about setting up an emotional support group for TP- PT users in their third and fourth weeks. I am feeling more than a little burned out, the DOMS is messing me up big time, I need plenty of sleep and still seem to wake up tired- And more than ever, I'm eating like a horse that has tapeworms, and his tapeworms are starving.
This workout is not for the faint of heart, that's for sure.

So you have 1 more week of Phase 1?

Did you happen to take any before pics? I didn't see them in the DB gallery. Just curious. You've mentioned that you received comments on size changes. I'm thinking that your body is responding.

And that at the end of Phase 1 you are reaching overtraining. Most common symptom is not wanting to go to the gym.

[William starts to laugh, then realizes he's only on workout 5A, and quickly shuts his piehole]

So about when did the evil start to creep in? So far I've just been feeling a bit more tired, and a wee bit hungrier. I'm just wondering how long I have before I start cursing Twin Peak's name...

Evil crept in on me near the end of week three. Evil moved into my apartment yesterday, invited his buddies Pain and Suffering over last night, and they ate everything in my fridge.
Yep, I got some before pics- I have to resize them and post them soon.

Lat pulldowns
Bent over rows, underhand grip
Lying leg curls
Machine hammer curls
Barbell curls
Barbell shrugs
Calf raises

Yesterday was a much needed, but highly ineffective rest day. Today, I got to do eight sets for each exercise. All I can say is, thank God this phase is almost over. My entire body is fried- I went to bed eariler than ever last night, and overslept this morning- All day, it felt as though I couldn't eat enough, and absolutely everything hurts. Actually, the muscles that hurt the most are my forearms- Even though there's been no direct forearm work in this phase, they've been getting blasted pretty damn good, and I found it hard to hold on to the bar for the last couple of sets for each barbell exercise. I wanted to quit at about six sets- Hell, I wanted to quit at three sets to tell the truth, I can honestly say I've never done such an intense workout as I did today. Supersetted everything again, I spent about an hour and a half, maybe a little more, getting through this one. I'm going to take some painkillers tonight, which I'm normally not in the habit of doing- But last night I woke up a couple of times from muscle pain- Not cramps, just pain.
