Lower Back Pain - Wednesday, June 21, 2006 2:40 AM
Since when i first started working out december, i started getting lower back pains, which i ignored (very stupid). Anywayz eventually i listened to the pain and stopped working out around Jan-Feb.

But the pain is still there, i got a bit worried and got an x-ray. The doctor said there was nothing serious, just the spine slightly not-straight, he said i could see a chiropractor, but wasn't neccessary. Anywayz, I wanna get your opionion on this.

Every now and then, I try to do some back exercises, but everytime I do it, the next day, my back seems worse. Is this because I do not do any exercises, and hence my back becomes stiff, so when i do it, it makes it worse. Or is it because the exercises are not done properly?

I did some back exercises yesterday, and now my back seems worse. Should I do it for another day, and see what happens the following day?

Thanks

Have someone else check your form on your exercises.  If your rounding your loweback or your posture is a little off, it could cause the pain.  Becareful with your back though.  Back injuries are no joke.  A buddy of mine just had to have surgery for a herniated disk.  He's now out for four months or so.
I would see the chiropractor and get his opinion.  If you plan on lifting for years to come, you need to take care of your body and listen to the signals that it gives you.  Pain is a signal saying that somethings not right.

yea...i might go see a chiropractor. i have a feeling that the x-ray results didn't show everything, they said i had the spine was straight exactly, but yea..nothing major. but i don't really trust it, cause my back pain has been ongoing for a bit.....

one more thing. is there a chance that i could have done some serious damage to my back as when i cough, the pain is aggrevated. i read somewhere that sometimes x-rays cannot detect any serious back problems for people experiencing back problems for the first time, which is in my case.

i think i might juz book in a chiropractor this wk, juz to clear any worries i might have. and i heard of spinal manipulation too, would this be a benefit to me, as in the x-ray results, they said my spine wasn't exactly straight.

X-rays aren't great to show back injuries because a majority of injuries deal more with the disks than the bones.  Disks don't show up on x-ray, they only show up on MRIs and CAT scans.  What they can tell on an x-ray is if the distance between your vertibrae is where it 'should' be.  If it isn't within thier 'guidlines' then they will investigate it further.  A slipped or compressed disk will not have as much space between vertebrae as a healthy one.

Stay away from the chiropractor.Acute back injuries and chiropractors are a bad combination in my opinion.

If youve seen youre doctor and they arent too worried about it, then you probably need to relax, take it easy, stretch, massage, ice/heat therapy, little more massage and a little more relaxing, possibly some anti-inflamms.

The last thing that a hurting back needs is to be 'snapped back' into place.

As ive said before, chiropractors have their time and place, but acute back injuries are definitely not one of them.
