Powerlifting Competition
-
Friday, March 26, 2004 12:47 PM
Hey All, There is going to be a power lifting competition in May at the gym we work out at. It will be myself, pwolf66, and mduble all part of the event. It will be a percent type event, but my personal goal is the total pounds moved. I have some lofty goals for myself, but I think I can make them. Here are the numbers I hope to get out: Squat 400 Bench 275 Deadlift 245??? Current weight is 245 I do not work deads regularly, so I hope to at least do body weight. Only time will tell. I just know I am big time psyked for this. Laser

Sounds cool- You know, if you got comfortable with doing deadlifts, you should be able to do way more than 245- You squat 400. Add some weight to your deadlifts, and you'll break 1000 pounds between all three lifts.

Unfortunately I will be limited in my squat to about 250 or so. Could probably grunt out 450 if I could go heavy between now and then but I can't Deadlift I'm shooting for 450 so we'll see Bench I hope to be around 315, I should get there. Paul

Sorry to hear it- I remember you posting somewhere else about it now... What's the word on that anyway? Any time frame on a full recovery, or is that something you're going to have to deal with long term?

Well, I would love to get the deadlifts up, but I just have not been working it. I am making an effort to work them in now, so I will have to see how it goes. I would love to hit 1000 lbs. Laser

Very cool. Seems like a lot of people are finding local competitions. That is pretty sweet! I just started deadlifts. Man.. that is some intense stuff. I'm thinking of backing down the weight until I get used to it. I was shooting for cpl weights but no way. Straps do help but I'm afraid that if I do not work up to it, I'll be down for the count. I'm okay on squats and bench but deadlifts.. that is just something that I wish I did earlier. Although stiff leg deadlifts have helped a lot with strengthening the lower back. There is going to be a power lifting competition in May at the gym we work out at. It will be myself, pwolf66, and mduble all part of the event. I will of couse expect a full write up.

You know we wil let you know all the juicy details. Well, my deadlifts went OK yesterday, I just need to focus on proper form. We were informed yesterday that the event would run like a standard event, in that there will be no pads, gloves, or straps. I tried my squats today without the pad, and under the scrutiny of the gym manager, with great success. The bar felt fine and I even raised my working weight to 325. I think 400 will be solid for the event, maybe even 425. More to come. Laser

Pwolf66 and myself were doing 1 reps with deadlift and I was successful with 295. I guess I was selling myself a little short on this one. I guess my new goal for the competition will be around 315-325. I think a have a real shot at 1000 lbs for the 3 lifts. Laser

Not a bad goal to shoot for- I figured you were selling yourself short. I'll be breaking the thousand pound mark myself soon.

Well I think it is a good goal for me at this stage. My weight is between 242-244 right now so that would put me at around a 4:1 ratio. I know that there will be people that smoke that ratio, but as a recovering Hostess-posterboy it works for me. Laser

...News Flash... New one rep on Deadlifts: 315. I have still not effectively worked on this exercise, so I am quite encouraged as to my potential for the event. I may give the 405 mark a try on squat tomorrow. We shall see. Laser

Update... I went for 405 on the squat today, after my workout. I got the weight off, went down under control, and brought it back up. The bad thing is that I was told that I did not get myself down far enough. I feel quite confident that I can do the weight considering I did this lift after 8 sets of squats. I am going after that weight again next week and hope to get 2 reps out. Using rough math, here is what I get for my 3 lifts and total: 405 Squat 315 Deadlift 245 Bench 965 Total That is well within acceptable numbers to get me over 1000 lbs for the 3 lifts. I have until May to gain another 35 lbs for 3 lifts, I can deal with that. Laser

Same here.. I was thinking that is impressive and another 30 lbs? Big deal. Just add some of the 2.5 lbs to the bar. I think LaserX2 has this one easy. 405 lb squat. DAMN. I'm always amazed at people who can do that.. for reps. And get low. Do you use straps on the deadlifts?

Here's where I'm at in this whole thing Bench: 285-295 (Depends on whether Larry enforces having to have a controlled pause at the bottom) Deadlift: 365 (at least that's the max that I have done so far) Squat: 315 (I hope, no idea as I have not pushed more than 185 in the last month or so) So I'm ahead on bench and deadlift but he's KILLING me on squat right now. I've got 4 weeks of training to do, so hopefully I can stay ahead of that monster Paul

I have been slacking on the updates. Last Thursday I upped my 1 rep on deadlift to 365. It felt like I was lifting a VW, but I did lock it out. With this I think I have guaranteed my 1000 lb goal and I still have a month to train. I am going to shoot for 1100 now, but no let-downs if I don't make it. It is all bonus weight now . My update for today is that I have finally gotten comfortable with 225 as a workout weight on bench. I was also able to do a couple sets of incline dumbs with no pain. I may yet be able to add pounds to the bench portion of the total pounds. I am shooting for 405 twice on squat tomorrow and maybe 425 once. I will post on it tomorrow. Laser

Update... Well, I went for 405 twice and got it! It felt so good, I wanted more. So I tried 415 and got that twice as well. I was pretty smoked after those lifts and the 6 sets before them. We'll see if I can take deadlift up another notch as well. Laser

Update... Well tried for new highs on the deadlft. I put 385 on and could not budge the damn thing. I backed it to 375 and got 1 out. Even that was tough. I hope to get some better love from it next week. Here are my running numbers: 415 Squat 375 Deadlift 250 Bench Press 1040 total I am going for a new high on Bench come Monday. Pwolf feels I should be able to get 275 off once. We shall find out Monday. Laser

I tried some new chest work today and I can feel the difference. My trainer is a power lifter and has passed some good exercies on to build my chest up. Not to mention the knowledge and help I get from Pwolf66. With the help of those two, I may reach my goal of 300 bench. Laser

Update.... I succeeded with 385 on the deadlift today. I think I could have done it twice, but my back already feels like I picked up a truck. Next week I am going to move the back workout to Thursday, because I feel today's work will hamper tomorrow's squatting. On Monday, Pwolf66, MDuble, and myself are all going to do 1 rep max bench. I have a feeling that Pwolf is going to hit the 315 mark. I am shooting for 275 and I am pretty sure I can get it. This cometition is going to rock. I feel stronger now than I have at any point before in my life. Just wish the belly wasn't there. Laser

Update... Well, it is more of a FYI. We have all added Lockouts to our Bench routine and I can already feel the difference. I am pushing my workout weights better than ever and I have moved my weight for Lockouts as high as 335. Maybe it is a mental thing, but being able to finish a press with 335 on the bar feels great. Can't weight til I can do a full rep with it. Laser

Update... Yesterday I made a new high in the squat. My max is now up to 435 and I still have more to give. I did my max weight after 8 sets, including 3 sets @ 345. I say I have more to give, because I did the 435 for 3 reps. Today I did deadlifts. I have some sort of kink in my back that really killed the effect of the workout. I did 2 sets @ 335, but was struggling for air from that pain. I decided to forego the 3rd set and opted to try a new max. I tried 405 and got about an inch or 2 of air and that was it. At least I was able to move it. I hope next week works out better. Current Numbers: 435 Squat 385 Deadlift 255 Bench 1075 Total 25 lbs to go in 2 weeks. It is going to be close. Laser
