So we agree chins are a leg exercise?

The way I do chins they are. I jump up and pull for one, jump up and pull for two. After a few of those my legs are screaming. Not much on my arms though.

Okay, okay, let me try this one:  For chins, the lats are the main movers.  The biceps are the agonists. The hams, quads, hip flexors, and abs are assisters.  The delts and triceps are primary and secondary antagonists, and that goes for the concentric, isometric, and eccentric phases of the lift.  There's by definition no change in motive force during the isometric pause.

MVP,  how'd I do?

All this applies for supinated, pronated, or neutral grips.  With the supinated grip, however, the biceps (err, what's the 5 dollar word here?) are additionally activated (don't think that's it, dammit).  :(

MVP,  how'd I do?

biceps are synergists, and I don't see how your leg muscle groups 'assist' you in chins? lol, and the delts aren't antagonists.

nice try though

I believe he was just joking around Virt.

The posterior delts aren't antagonists, they're synergists.

Lats are agonists.

Biceps and posterior delts are the main synergists.

Okay, I was trying to be funny but now I'm learnin' stuff.  Cool!  For chins lats are agonists (also called prime movers).  Biceps are synergists.  What are the antagonists (thought delts because opposite motion from pullup would be OH press which is delts)?  And don't you sometimes use leg motion to assist you when doing pullups?  That's why I called them assisters.  Oh well, I guess no future trainer here.  :(

Stabilizers stabilize a specific joint so another joint can performed a desired movement.

As far as the contractions go, the prime stabilizer in the eccentric action is the antagonist.

When you do a biceps curl, the triceps are antagonists.

During the bench press, the posterior deltoids and lats are antagonists.

Basically the eccentric stabilizers.

I'm guessing the antagonists of a chin-up would be anterior delts and triceps? I'll have to check my PT book. JK!

Another trick JMBS. Think of the opposing movement.

During a bench press, the barbell row is the opposing movement. Why? If you reverse the force in the same plane, you're doing a barbell row. Same thing with a barbell curl, if you reverse the force, it's a triceps extensions.

Then think of the agonist muscle in the opposing exercise and that's the antagonist.

Yeah, the opposing movement to a pullup would be an overhead press, right?  That's why I was thinking the delts (probably anterior and lateral heads, and clavicular head of the pecs, and as you say triceps) would be the antagonists.  Right?

That's me.

Do what you want but again try to focus on the main topic and stay cool.

I am a split type of person and that's part of it. I like the feeling, the pump and of course the results I have that you might not have because we are all different.

Nic I was looking through the critique my physique section and saw an old picture of you on there, you're a pretty big guy.

I think you and I are in the same size in height and weight, although your bodyfat is a bit lower.

simply because they don't match my physique of right now.
I was so small at that time.

I am now more defined and have more muscle to show.
