is this training regimen ok? - Wednesday, April 28, 2004 5:59 AM
Hey, I don't know if this was covered already, but I was wondering if someone could tell me if I am doing too much.

I currently do cardio early in the morning, immediately after I wake up 7 days a week, then I lift on the Max-OT program in the afternoons 5 days a week, then I do cardio again at around 10pm 7 days a week. I am cutting right now, so is that ok? Thanks for the info.

I think that is too much cardio. I mean, you didn't say what kind and how much, but twice a day, 7 days a week sounds like too much. You will probably end up burning some muscle keeping that up.

Tom Venuto (in BFFM) does say that sometimes adding in 2 cardio sessions per day (temporarily) can help jump start you if your weight loss is stalled, but I don't think he meant 2 cardios + lifting in one day. Not to mention, you will probably get burned out quickly on a schedule like that.

Keep an eye on your body fat percentage (and conversely your Lean Body Mass) and make sure you are not loosing muscle. A good rule of thumb is 1-2 lbs per week means its mostly fat.

But then again, I am a "less is more" kind of person when it comes to cardio. I can loose at the 1-2 lb per week rate by doing cardio 3x/week. I might be stepping that up a bit for the contest (4-5 times per week), but it will be a mix of traditional cardio and guerilla cardio - because I work too hard for these muscles to loose any.

yeah, sorry, i forgot to include type and time. I do elliptical without arms for 20 minutes at high intensity in the morning, then I do 20 minutes of a little lower intensity at night. I'm only planning on doing the twice a day thing for a few more weeks, then I am back to normal.

Twice a day, and seven days a week of anything could be overtraining, whether you're cutting or not. You have to allow your body to rest from everything you throw at it- Cardio included.
