HBF,
First of all, never too old.  You have the benefit of life experience, which young guys don't.  You've learned what doesn't work (drinking, smoking).  You have healthy goals (would like to play sports?, bodybuilding).  Natural, imo, is the way to go.  You know it's the healthier way, don't you?  There is plenty to be accomplished and sooner than you might imagine, by living more healthfully.  There's no magic pill  (roids) that will get you where you want to be quicker without consequences, imo.  You have taken that most important step by setting goals, making them known to others so you are accountable to them and have people who can help you.  No one should have to take on a big goal by themselves.  It's your goal and you're going to have to do the lion's share of the work, and it will be work, let no one fool you.  But you have friends, here at least, that are available to help you every step of the way.

Give us some details.  I can't recall whether you did in another thread already.  Weight, stats, pictures if possible, training history however little, age, goals (fat loss, muscle gain, better diet, quitting drinking/smoking, etc.).  One step at a time.  Step one is to give us some more info.  Good workin' out!  :)

Well, I'd be the last person to poo-poo the idea of being addicted to something healthy, but it bears mentioning that taking things to that extreme can lead to an obsession.  You should embrace working out and living healthy because it offers your life discipline and focus and an outlet for stress -not because you sell your soul to it.  Virtually every guy I've ever known who was that consumed by bodybuilding ended up on the juice -and while most of them have no regrets and no side effects, plenty of them do.

That said, I'd echo JMBS's sentiments about age.  Bodybuilding is the emmer effin' fountain of YOUTH.  It is NEVER too late to start building the body of your dreams and getting in the best shape of your life.  I too regret not getting off my bony ass when I was in high school (I was too busy chasing after girls who wouldn't give me the time of day).  I thought that after 35, my testosterone was supposed to start plummeting, and I was ready to write off my chances of getting jacked up based on that alone.  In fact, I didn't really get serious about lifting until my second year of college, and I was still screwing around making every mistake in the book.

Not until very recently (how long have I been on DBB?  since 2005?) did I get it right, and still, I have made the best progress of my entire life in the last six months.  Trust me when I say AGE IS NO IMPEDIMENT HERE.

Well it's my sincere hope you won't find any "morale killers" on this site.  6'5" 170 must mean you have practically no fat, right?  That's a very good thing!  You've been clean for a long time.  Another very good thing!  I know it's hard, but try to get to the point where YOU are the one that gets to decide about YOUR success.  We all like a good compliment but learn to either tune out the naysayers or use their criticism constructively.  There may be a grain of truth to what they say, even if they say it in a mean way.  I hardly know you, and it's very bold on my part to give you advice, but I will anyway.  I, like you, have children to think about.  Remind yourself that your goals of strength, looking good, and living long are great goals to have, and they can benefit those you love too, BUT try your hardest not to make any (what you see as) failures on those goals impact the well being of those you love.  In my opinion you should make sure they are your number one priority.  Your goals you may want to do for you, and that's cool because a happy you can make for a happy family.  Just don't make your goals so unachievable that you risk disappointment and perhaps falling back into old ways.  Do you know what I'm saying?  I think we can help you set realistic goals and help you with ways to achieve them.  You can bounce progress or lack thereof off us and we can motivate you and fix the problems.  There are some very knowledgeable people on this site.  You've come to the right place.

I'll leave the details to the experts, but what are some specifics?  Living long will mean looking at your diet.  What do you eat and how much?  What does looking good mean to you?  Can you describe your look now or send us a picture.  How specifically do you want to look?  The bodybuilding experts can help you with a workout routine.  Do you have weights at home or access to a gym?  Do you do any exercise?

Hold your head high, brother!  You made the right move!  :)

I had a $50 Kmart barbell/dumbell/concrete weight set and bench for the longest time.  I got a ton of use out of it.  Do you just have one set of dumbbells?  How heavy?  Do you have a set of weights for the curling bar?
