I may catch some flack here, but I think bench is one of the compound exercises where if you didnt want to do it, you can get away with substituting something else for chest. Strength wise I think you get more out of OHP anyway. One of the reasons why I think its much more important then bench. however, I think dips/weight dips can replace flat bench if you really wanted to. Even in sports the motion of Pushing something away from your chest isn't as common as generating power from your hips/posterior chain etc. I would still recommend doing them, but like I said its my opinion you can sub this in.

Doing easier exercises kind of defeats the purpose... But if that's what you want, just stick to curls and calf raises.

Only problem I have with weighed dips is it's a less natural movement and it doesn't hit the clavicular head of the pec quite as much as a flat bench. Bench is in the big three, weightlifting is about doing things you don't want to do, if we all only did the exercises we liked it would be very rare to see someone deadlifting or squatting.

Do the lift, get over it and you'll be fine.

I'm starting to love the decline. I have long arms, but a short stature. I'm built similar to a damn gorilla. I get better pumps out of the decline and the weight on it is going up quick. It's probably just where I'm not doing flat bench right now, but you get the point.

I think he meant that coming from a mostly physical aspect, your in the gym to train hard and to beat up your body so when you rest you can rebuild. You have to enjoy being in the gym mentally anyway, thats why so many people quit, they have no mental willpower to stay in the gym and train hard.

Unless you're pretty advanced you shouldn't need declines. In a room full of 10 people 3 might actually need to incorporate the movement itself as a tool. The technique requires trial and error and the biggest factor is that you feel your lower chest contracting and in order to do I have to push the resistance up at an 70 degree angle or else I feel nothing. Try to stick with incline presses and weighted dips, they should hit the clavicular head and sternal head of the pec pretty efficiently.

Using that grip will likely result you been able to bench more weight as the distance to bench is reduced, but it's unhealthy for your shoulders and unless if u're interested in powerlifting, I don't see the reason why you would need to. Just keep to the rings for benching.

it's going to damage your shoulders more as vdk pointed out and it will also involve less of the triceps. i would just keep slightly wider than shoulder width, benches in general are hard on the shoulders.

Bench is probably my favorite part of the gym. Im slowly increasing my weight on it but always worry the shoulder i dislocated will pop again.
Just starting out but watch this space!
