okay...

i have decided to invest in as much of a home gym as possible...

what is the primary thing(s)/most important component I should buy? (keep it within $250, as cheap as possible).

specifically, I wanted to buy a bench press more than anything else. what kind/brand would you recommend? what store should it get it at? i was checking out dick's sporting goods and the sports authority, but uhhh.... their selection is overpriced?

Realistically, you need to design you home gym around your workout. If you want to do squats (And you should) you have to get something that will enable you to do squats. Not every bench out there has that option, and to be totally honest, a squat rack is the best way to go when it comes to safety/stability.
Personally, I've found that I can do most of my week's workout with nothing more than a set of free weights- Except when it comes to leg and chest days. You have to have a bench for chest, and you have to have some sort of safe setup for the squats and calf raises. The only other thing I have access to but rarely use is a lat pulldown station- I've been doing weighted pullups instead.
I have seen some decent benches out there that have large catches for the bar which could give you a reasonable amount of safety when it comes to squats- But I'm pretty sure they cost around 250, and you still have to buy the weights.

I have an IMPEX Powerhouse PHC 1955. You can get a lat pulldown station if you want too. I don't have that, but once I get more $$$ I'll be getting one of those. I wish I had a power rack for my squats, but those are quite expensive. If you do squats without any kind of protective rack, don't go to failure unless you have a spotter. I also have CAP Barbells 300 lb weight set and a few more CAP 10, 5, and 2.5 lb plates that I added, plus an EZ Curl bar. This is an olympic set, which I think is easier for me because I am "wide" The regular bar wasn't big enough I felt like I was cramped in a box when I went to bench press. I also have the CAP dumbbells too. They are a PITA, but it's cheaper and easier than buying a set of dumbbells.

DUH! I forgot about that link. Ya know, I still have yet to do that. I would if it was my own house, but it's my parents. I really don't want to fark up their basement....LOL.I've been told already that the bench is coming with me when I move out. The problems comes to when I move out, will it fit into a studio apartment? LOL.

Here's a decent bench Mikeman pointed us at in another post- He was looking at one slightly cheaper than this one, but this one's a little better in my opinion. Here's why, and it's the same reason I'd advise against getting either of the benches you posted links to-
The uprights, the two pieces that the weight will rest on, are too close together on a lot of the cheaper benches. If you want to spend some money on a bench, you might as well get something that you'll get good use out of for at least a year. Within a year, you're going to be lifting some pretty heavy weights, and when you have uprights that are too close together and you try to place a lot of weight on them, you start to have balance issues. I've seen improperly placed weights at around two hundred pounds tip right off a bench that had close uprights- The further apart those uprights are, the less chance there is of the weight being unbalanced. In fact, once you're dealing with actual olympic benches, there's no way the weight can tip off because the uprights are so far apart. Benches built with them close together are really not made to handle heavy weights. Take a good look at the bench I linked to, see if you can get an idea of what I'm talking about, and then look around and see if you can find a better deal for something similar, I didn't really look that hard myself.
