okay... i have decided to invest in as much of a home gym as possible... what is the primary thing(s)/most important component I should buy? (keep it within $250, as cheap as possible). specifically, I wanted to buy a bench press more than anything else. what kind/brand would you recommend? what store should it get it at? i was checking out dick's sporting goods and the sports authority, but uhhh.... their selection is overpriced?

Realistically, you need to design you home gym around your workout. If you want to do squats (And you should) you have to get something that will enable you to do squats. Not every bench out there has that option, and to be totally honest, a squat rack is the best way to go when it comes to safety/stability. Personally, I've found that I can do most of my week's workout with nothing more than a set of free weights- Except when it comes to leg and chest days. You have to have a bench for chest, and you have to have some sort of safe setup for the squats and calf raises. The only other thing I have access to but rarely use is a lat pulldown station- I've been doing weighted pullups instead. I have seen some decent benches out there that have large catches for the bar which could give you a reasonable amount of safety when it comes to squats- But I'm pretty sure they cost around 250, and you still have to buy the weights.

Behold! The 11$ squat rack. Or at least a link to a link to an 11$ squat rack...

Here's a decent bench Mikeman pointed us at in another post- He was looking at one slightly cheaper than this one, but this one's a little better in my opinion. Here's why, and it's the same reason I'd advise against getting either of the benches you posted links to- The uprights, the two pieces that the weight will rest on, are too close together on a lot of the cheaper benches. If you want to spend some money on a bench, you might as well get something that you'll get good use out of for at least a year. Within a year, you're going to be lifting some pretty heavy weights, and when you have uprights that are too close together and you try to place a lot of weight on them, you start to have balance issues. I've seen improperly placed weights at around two hundred pounds tip right off a bench that had close uprights- The further apart those uprights are, the less chance there is of the weight being unbalanced. In fact, once you're dealing with actual olympic benches, there's no way the weight can tip off because the uprights are so far apart. Benches built with them close together are really not made to handle heavy weights. Take a good look at the bench I linked to, see if you can get an idea of what I'm talking about, and then look around and see if you can find a better deal for something similar, I didn't really look that hard myself.
