hmm, would this be the right place? - Thursday, July 21, 2005 4:39 PM
Went to the gym exactly 7 hours ago, went to bed, and only just got up (i work very hard at the gym and usually sleep right after as it takes so much of my energy)

Today i was working just arms and chest

I was doing preacher curls, and was happy that id gone over my usualy maximum training weights.

But now i've woken up i found that my bicep now right in the middle of it on top (the "mountain top" as it were) has a giant indent in it, at first i thought it was a muscle kink-i make sure to stretch before during and after my exercises, and keep stretching it now.

But it wont go, it looks REALLY bad....its not little...its as though someones taken a knife and taken a massive chunk of my arm out...I was like WTF when i saw it...its really bad

what the hell has happened?
and is it permanent?

what the?? That doesnt sound good. Is it painful to touch? Is your arm sore when you move it in any particular way?

Get a picture up if you can so we can see whats going on.

From what you describe, 'dents' in the muscles usually mean that youve ruptured something - in this case you could have ruptured your bicep and/or snapped a bit of the tendon that connects it to the bone.

Or it could just be something simple, like you slept on something funny and its left an indent.

Get a picture up if you can so we can see what your talking about.

But i strongly suggest that if there is indeed an indent in your bicep and its painful that you go see you doctor right now.

Its not painful at all, it just feels like a groove, like a valley kind of thing in my arm, I'll go get my phone and try to take a pic now

You sure that you didnt sleep on anything?

Did you feel a snap? or hear a pop? Is your bicep moving normally otherwise? Does it feel sore to press around the dent?

Ok, do this - its known as the Ludingtons test.

Put your hands behind your head and ask someone to stand behind you as you flex and unflex both your biceps. See if they can see an uneveness in the way the muscle is moving. Then get them move in front of you and watch the muscle move.

It might pay to be safe and get an ultrasound mate - if for nothing else, then just for some peace of mind. Go see your doctor and get one done. Theyre not expensive like MRIs or anything, and u can get the results as the test is being done. Quick and painless.

Nope, no popping or anything, it doesnt even feel sore, my biceps only get stiff and sore after 24 hours of being worked usually...
from what i know its moving normally...

when you say uneveness? do you mean both biceps flexxing at different times, or a part of the bicep thats screwed by the looks of it moving then another part moving afterwards?

is a ruptured bicep tendon bad?
does it heal itself?

Id rather not go for a scan as ive only just had one and dont really like them...
but if its gonna get worse then il go and see a doc to get a scan

I did preacher curl til i failed...and was half way lifting it for like 10 seconds, before my muscles pretty much gave out and stopped....i didnt feel anything bad though, just the normal failure...

I have to work this weekend and i use my arms as im a plasterer...will this screw my arm up even more if it is a ruptured bicep/tendon?

Flexing and relaxing at the same time.

A rupture bicep is quite bad - depending on how bad it is, it usually need surgery if big tears. especially in young, fit active people such as yourself. However, saying this, we're not even sure its a rupture bicep so no need to get panicky. The fact that you have no pain whatsoever makes it more likely to NOT be a rupture bicep/tendon - but with things like these, we can never say never.

Tell you what, since youre not keen on going to the doc, why dont you wait it out for a day or 2. See how your arm holds up. If it starts hurting or is weaker than your other arm, then you know something is going on.

why dont you like an ultrasound? its not like sitting in a machine or anything. All you have to do is sit there with your arm showing - theyll put some gel on your arm and have a little probe that person uses to scan under the skin. Have you ever seen pregnant women getting scans on their stomach so they can see the baby inside? thats exactly what an ultrasound is.

If youve rupture your bicep, then yes, working it this weekend could well make it worse. But if you havent ruptured, then it shouldnt. Like i said, the only way to tell for sure is an ultrasound.

See how you go in the next day or 2 and how the arm holds up. Keep us updated as to whats going on.

Lets hope that im being overly cautious and its nothing serious. But hey, better safe than sorry right?

It isnt indented when my arm isnt flexxed...

I dont like ultrasound because i had to have one...earlier this year and for something young men get, and dont like scans...

My arm always hurts after a workout so thats gonna be hard to tell lol...but im assuming the pain will be quite different...

I'll tell my mum tommorow even though she'll just say "im worrying too much"
and now my right arm feels all weak ang tingly, the entire arm...though thats nothing to go by, it started when you said it might be serious, and im prone to psychological pain and when i worry i get symptoms that is just psychological

If you have slept on something then you have just made both us look very silly - you for not noticing and thinking sometihngs taken a chunk out of your arm and Me, for believing you, and becoming alarmist and thinking of the worst case scenario.

hang on....

would this indent be noticable right after the tendon bicep ruptured/snapped?

because my bicep was fine after the exercise, and fine when i got back home, it was only after i woke up....

would the indent appear instantly after the accident?

Just when i start thinking "Ok, calm down Lynx, take deep breaths in and out. its all going to be ok. stop hyperventilating", you go and say something like "and now my right arm feels all weak ang tingly, the entire arm..."

Just wait it out till tommorow and see how your arm holds up.
