hip flexor pain while squatting - Monday, July 06, 2009 5:13 PM ( #1 )
For some reason at the bottom of my squats i get this annoying pain in both my hip flexors. This is the only time i get it.  My form seems decent, which is why im rather curious about why this happens.  I would appreciate some insight or possible solutions if anyone knows of one.

only advice i can give you is to maybe not go down so deep, and do the kneeling hip flexor stretch.

typically most people have tight flexors due to sitting alot so i dont know if you fall into that category or not.

Post a video of your squat.

Go as deep as possible during your squats and don't try to pause putting unnecessary tension on the knees. It could be a sign of weak hip flexsors. Remember to drive the weight up with your hips, not your knees. Also remember to use a wider stance.

No one can really give a prescription without acknowledging your form. Post a video of your squat so we can further analyze.

I used to get pain in my hip flexsors all the time when I was doing fake squats. When I say this, I mean I don't consider a "squat" a "squat" until you at least hit or break parallel. People act astonished when they squat with me because of how low I go. They insist on thinking it's  bad for your knees but it's actually better for your knees.

The posterior chain takes more stimulus as you get down to the position of knee flexsion (although the knee flexsors are not the agonists, because the knee flexsion occurs with gravity, not against it).

The best thing you can do is just post a video on here, there are tons of guys on here like brihead and N$ that knows good squat form when they see it. There are also plenty of good squat demonstration videos on youtube, you could compare that to your form. You also might even be going too heavy on your squats, too many things that there could be and we'll never know until we see it for ourselves.

So just record a video and post it on the video section, we'll critique as necessary.

yeah i agree completely, a good squat has to be at least parallel. some people are just rather uneducated and sacrifice their depth in order to put more weight up, and for some reason feel this will give them a better workout.  it almost pisses me off seeing people doing "half squats" in the gym. but yeah i'll see what i can do about the video

I firmly believe that the pain comes as a result of too much pressure being put on already shortened/tightened hip flexors than there needs be.

If you're gonna stimulate the hip flexors more and more, and continue to sit down in daily life, or have that peliv tilt/excessive lordosis (just overlook my jargon, I'll get to the point :p), then you should stretch your hip flexors more and more.

Solutions:
- Stretch hip flexors much more frequently than you do.
- Do more core exercises! Abs sound like they need more strength if there is a pelvic tilt. Try to keep in mind that the most ideal way for the abdominals to build strength is to stabilize the rest of the body, so not so much crunches/sit-ups. Do more prone static holds, or swiss-ball stuff. Does that make sense or should I throw in some examples?

Hope all goes well.

I've been trying different things since i posted this and i believe that its not the squatting thats doing it, i feel that its a recurring injury since the football season. i had trouble with both of my hip flexors during the season. i pulled the right one pretty good and had mild trouble with the left, and thats kinda how it feels now. the right one is worse than the left.  i most likely just need to keep stretching them more and more to help them heal up. but thanks for the advice

Its already been hit on, but stretch your hip flexors. This can be done after your workouts and any other time through out the day (bedtime/morning/commercial on tv)

and practice going all the way down in the squat and keep practicing good form. Nothing stretch's your muscles to perform well in a given exercise, like the actual exercise itself.

Also keep in mind to take it easy with the exercises. Don't beat yourself up, just add a bit of stimulation until it feels a lot better.

And it might be a good idea to add in some bilateral innovation, simply put that is, exercise one side at a time till the other side catches up. So Single-Leg Squats, Lunges and functional exercises like that would be quite beneficial for your current state but again, don't overdo it.

In the end, you know your body better than anyone else.
