hi max, low rep. wtf. - Sunday, October 01, 2006 2:39 PM
i would like a hand with this, because its been bugging the hell outta me.
i gain bench weight fast. usually upping my max about 4 lbs a week. my max is currently 230. but for some reason, i am stuck at doing 185 for 4 reps at best. what is up here? according to a bench press calc, i oughta be doing 7 reps!

also, if you have any tips on exercise splits/blocking, do let me know.

please help.

Muscle adapts to how you train, plain and simple. If you concentrate more on moving heavy amounts of weight, your muscle will perform best when doing just that- It doesn't always mean your endurance with lower amounts of weight will go up.
The same is true the other way around- Training for endurance doesn't automatically increase your max lifts either.
Take this as an extreme example- A marathon runner trains for endurance, yet would get smoked in a short race. A sprinter trains for high speed over short distances- And would get lapped easily in a long race.
