hey, im a new memeber, Name is Jeku n im 17 im one of those "amatures" who work out top .. but not too much .. didnt do back, or legs .. doin all that right now. well my prob is i got lower back pain whenever i do cardio. and it basically messes up the rest of my workout plans. i havent workd out my back directly, just when i do military press(i think it works out the back, not good at the terms etc). any suggestions besides go to the doctor would be good .. mainly cuz i know i have no back issues. i have my own weight room so i workout in there. total of 185Ibs. i bench more, but the rest of the muscles is below. Jku

Try stretching real good before running- That can be the cause of that particular problem sometimes. Another obvious way to battle any sort of back pain is to work out your back- Which I'm sure you knew was coming. Sounds like you're ready for it, anyway- Why not try a workout like this? Monday- Chest Tuesday- Legs Wednesday- Shoulders Thursday- Back Friday- Arms, abs Military presses, by the way, do not work out the back- They're a shoulder exercise. If you feel them in your back at all, it's because your back is used to keep your body in the proper position while your shoulders do the work- And your back is weak, so it's having a hard time doing that simple job. You mentioned you've started working out your back already- But it sounds like you haven't been at it for long. How about listing your whole workout? Perhaps we can help with some better exercises.

i have heard that also back pain can also come from your back working overlly hard to compensate for your abs being weak. doing the suggested workout would help with stregthing back and abs. and dont feel bad about working only the top half of your body i did it for a year before i finally figured it out. i think most beginners make that mistake.

I would agree with whoever said weak abs. I know as a gymnasts, those who had weaker stomachs, had more back problems than everyone else.

What kind of cardio are you doing? Try switching your cardo to something non impacting, like elliptical training or recumbant biking. The lower back contains a lot of nerves that extend to your muscles, and your internal organs. Often, back pain is what's called "phantom pain", or "Translational pain" and you're really hurting somewhere else, but it feels like it's in your back. this can be caused by aggrivating muscles that aren't often used. Often times, people reporting back pain or other large fast twitch muscle pain are in pain because of imporperly excercising(poor form, too heavy of weights, unbalanced excercise, "rocking"(see too heavy of weights).) To isolate this problem, do a good warmup(at least 7-8 minutes) before ANY activity, and make sure to stretch. I totally agree with the statement about your abs, and make sure not just to tone your upper abs, your abdominus rectus, and your oblques need to be worked too. Roman chair excercises can work wonders on back pain.

Excellent point about translational pain- I never knew there was a name for that! A lot of people don't realize, for example, the relationship between the hamstrings and lower back. Weak hamstrings, or other problems related to them, can cause your lower back all sorts of problems and pain. Not saying this is necessarily the case here, but it's something to think about.

sorry for not postin back .. forgot where i posted the help lol >.< i drink lotta water .. and i stoped doin Military press and i tried out the Guerila Cardio .. i did 30 sec runs wit 10 sec jogs and did them bout 8 times. right now im focusin on my calves, back, and heart. everything i do cardio, everything messes up cause my back jus cant take it. and then there are my calves which jus dont seem to wanna grow -.- umm basically the back pain started after i did guerilla cardio. wake up the next morning and the pain was there .. but not too bad .. so i took a day off from workin out. next day i did some deadlifes bout 165Ibs, and then some squats(165ibs) .. wake up next moring and pain was unbearable .. and it stayed like that for 4 days. now its gone so ima start workin out again. and the calves is my next prob. i dont know what im doing wrong. i stand on the ledge and i do the work out where u bring ur heel up, then all the way down, then keep repeatin. do bout 100 of them.

ORIGINAL: ColeG The lower back contains a lot of nerves that extend to your muscles, and your internal organs. Often, back pain is what's called "phantom pain", or "Translational pain" and you're really hurting somewhere else, but it feels like it's in your back. this can be caused by aggrivating muscles that aren't often used. A few minor corrections are needed here: 1) Phantom pain is very rare (except in exceptional cases) to get in the back. Phantom pain is where the body perceives that the pain in a certain part of the body that does not exist. E.g. When people have their arms amputated at the elbow in car crashes, they often feel like their 'hands' are on fire. Ofcourse, they dont have hands but the body 'interprets' it as hand pain. Its due to extensive nerve damange and forming of malaligned nerve bundles. That kinda thing is not usually seen in the back. 2) 'Translational pain' you refer to - the more correct term is 'referred' pain. And that too isnt very common in backs because while we are evolving as embryo's, our 'back tissues' evolve from and remain as the same 'type of embryonic tissue'. Again, itll take a long spiel to type exactly the how and whys of it but youll just have to take my work for it. Hence, backpain, can be GENERALISED (e.g. arthritis, anklyosing spondylitis, spinal malaligntment (e.g. scoliosis, kyphosis)) but usually not phantom or referred. Saying this, referred pain can occur but its not common. Sorry to seem like a know-it-all but i just thought i should correct it.

I believe they call it a rebuttle; Yes, medically phantom pain refers to nerve endings that are no longer attached to the brain, ie limb amputation, and congenital absence. But in the fitness world, phantom pain is pain that is associated with poorly developed muscles being over used. For example, you may expereince phantom pain after changing abdominal excercises, because you're using mucles in a different way, and the nerve endings are interpreting it as pain. Referred pain, is often also called radiant pain, and it's the result of sensory nerves working as a network and causing motor nerves to exhibit "pain" Referred pain is almost ALWAYS found in the lower back, pelvis or thighs. Again, translational pain is the result of a confused series of nerves making your muscles more tired or sore than they need to be. It is COMPLETELY unrelated to referred pain. Arthritis can nearly be ruled out because it hurts the morning after, not during. Anklyosing Spondylitis is an absolute no, because he would've mentioned previous back pain or stiffness. I suppose one could make an argument towards scoliosis, though any half decent doctor would've informed him of that by now. I'm not farmiliar with kyphosis, but it sounds like hypnosis, and he's definately not being hynotized. Sorry to sound defensive, but I do in fact have some ethos in the matter. :) Further correct me, if I am further wrong.

hey mate :D I used to have that problem in my lower back every time i ran, i think its just your muscles that are getting used to it, as it only happened with me when i started and when i had a break and started again... Just keep up the good work and after a few days it should gradually disappear :D
