Hey, i want to gain alot of strength,but also muscle, so does strength training increase muscle mass alot too? or do you not gain much? I have been doing mass training(4 sets of 10 for each excersise). But whats a good routine for mass/and strength training? Id really appreciate it if someone made me a rountine thats good for both things. Not like a big routine just like an example would be nice.

apparently the 5x5 and 2x2 routines good, meant to build strength and size.

5 sets of 5 reps, and then do 2 sets of 2 reps with higher weight, and do that with every exercise.

Haven't done it myself-but will be starting this routine soon

yea thats what i do and it does work, but i do more than one exercise per muscle.

i am currently doin the 5x5 but without the 2x2 didnt know about that maybe have to try it today
also i have experienced more mass with the strength trainin
i like the 5x5 more than the old style i did with the 3x8-12
i still train with higher reps when i do isolation exercises
anything heavy and compound i use the 5x5 tho

Like the others mentioned a 5X5 program will work well. Just to add my to cents into the mix I would like to suggest a few things.

To gain power or strength your muscles need to be exposed to high weight that results in near maximal muscle contractions. Training in this manner recruits more of your type 2 muscle fibers, which are responsible for your speed and strength. It is also important to take longer rests when training for strength. For maximum strength gains you need to be fully recovered before attempting your next set. A good rest period would be between 3 an 7 minutes.

Building size requires more volume and less rest. It is important to being your sets before your muscles are fully recovered when trying to add mass. Training for size on average you are looking at sets with 6 – 12 reps.

The 5X5 keeps you under the rep range of bodybuilders so you are left with rest intervals as your variable. To add the strength you are looking for keep the rest a little longer but to tap into the Type 1 muscle fibers that build mass you want to be fresh but not fully recovered.

Just a question...  Why would someone want to build mass when they can be gaining mass and strength.  What is the mass anyway if its not as much strength?  Not fully developed muscle..?

because if your strictly bodybuilding thats exactly what your trying to do, you dont give jack Sh*t about streangth you just want to pack on as much mass as possible. Atheletes train for both (supposubly), and power lifters train for streangth.

I switch around my reps allot. I used to do a heavy 4x reps for my set sbut now im going 10x.
you should switch around you reps, sets, exersises, methods and stuff every 5-8 weeks

when your going heavy you learn neuromuscular strength and mind to muscle connection it also stengthens you tendons. Going lighter weight doesent have theses effects.

Yea, it's basically muscle that has less strength in practical situations and compound lifts.

have you tryed super sets, 5x5 workouts, drop sets....the list goes on and on. some are onely to bust out of a platue ( rising & decendin sets and giant sets.) and some are for gaining muscle or strength

you can even couple some of them together. like a multiangle tri set followed by several super sets.

just a suggestion be creative.

Some people care more about being big and intimidating. And it is cool to actually make your body into exactly the form you want it to be. Like with me I am naturally big, so I develop muscle just by working at my job. Especially my arms, I wear an X-Large shirt, and the sleeves are always tight. But I like the idea of having the body I want while still being really strong to back up my size.

Sorry I messed up on that last reply, I dont know how to seperate my message from the one that I was replying to. But I like the idea of the 5X5 and the 2X2's. I think when I start working out again tomorrow, I will train using that set/rep set up.
