Personally, Have used gloves in the past, but I dont like them any more. Now I prefer bare hands for everything. If my grip is suffering I just use some chalk

a guy at the gym uses chalk too. barehanded worked for me, i justheard you can get some more stability from the wrist wraps. like when you're doing shrugs, itkeeps the dumbell from sliding down to your finger tips or something

Personaly I use gloves for better grip and Wrist straps for al those heavy lifts like BB Shrugs & deadlifts.I can go heavier as I dont have to worry about grip too much ,They kinda hold the weight for you..

I'd say if you are doing alright barehanded, just keep doing it. IMO, it would improve your grip strength. For example, if you do deadlift without any straps, I believe you could build better forearms strength.

Gloves seem pointless, unless you really want soft hands or something. Wrist wraps are good in certain circumstances but its like redjeep said, limit their use. I don't use wrist wraps anymore but if I were to use them I would probably use them on my last set of deadlift, barbell rows, or shrugs (and maybe not even rows). To me those are the three lifts where the main muscles involved have the potential to be so much stronger than forearms that it is nearly impossible to not have your forearms hold you back on the heaviest set. Plus your forearms will get worked out just fine if you only use wrist wraps on like one set every couple workouts. Forearm strength suffers when people use wrist wraps for nearly every lift.

Barehanded, always. I have never used gloves or straps. While both of these have their part/place.... IMO, they are not needed. I chalk up on heavy deadlifts. For heavy shrugs, i just use the smith machine b/c anything over 100 pound DB's really digs into my palms BAD. pain = i focus on that instead of form.. and we can't have that. i have a few calluses on each hand (hot stuff i know )... but the rest of my hands are soft. it's right at the top of my palm where the rough calluses are. I have a feeling that gloves would mess me up anyways. 7 years of bodybuilding with no gloves.. no point in downgrading now, it's a habit.

placebo effect.... i bet you could lift the same amount of weight on certain lifts. shrugs and deadlifts.. maybe NOT as much, i can see how gloves might help there. i just chalk up and we're good to go

i use gloves as my gym doesnt allow chalk. But I found that my hands don't hurt as much when doing shrugs - the almost dead skin hurts like hell. I love em - but thats just me.

The longer you lift without gloves, the less you need them. When I first started lifting my hands looked like they were infected with leprosy (almost bleeding from the lifting). Now I just have a bunch of rough spots on my hands that have no feeling. Why get gloves? Just be patient and grow your own.

I don't think using gloves is a huge issue, they aren't bad for keeping the callouses down, but when they get nasty you need to chuck them or else they are self defeating. I don't use them personally and I would like to use chalk instead. IMO, never use wrist wraps unless you are lifting an absolute incredible amount of weight that you can just barely hold on to. I've never used them and I don't intend to. Same goes for weight belts, they are a crutch you don't want to lean on because they will make you weaker and not stronger if you rely on them.

ORIGINAL: deadlysuperstar ORIGINAL: bulkingup Someone referenced steinbeck???? He's my favorite writer of all-Time! Heh heh, I might upload a video I made back in HS. It was called "The Blue Pearl" and it was a home video adaptation of The Pear I did for AP Englishl. Complete with Coyotito, Juanita, and I had my Canadian friend play the veternarian and he had such a strong French accent and low grasp of the English language, when asked if he could help a poisoned Coyotito on a shoestring budget, he said, "What do I look like, a Vegetarian?" Comedy gold. I was like 6'3", 150lbs in that video and I did my own stunts. HaHaHa! Sounds classic...you really should upload it! Yeah I love anything Steinbeck wrote... I've been reading "Travels with Charley"...which was published in 1961...only 7 years before he died. It's an awesome book about he and his dog(Charley) traveling the american roadsides..."Discovering america"...its really cool and gives great insight into the economic and political landscape of the 1960's...really cool read!

I used to lift without gloves in high school and at university. I had some pretty epic calluses. Then I took a gymnastics class and found out how painful torn calluses are. I started wearing gloves and now do so out of habit.
